Butler, Pennsylvania is a village in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The village has a post Office and ZIP code of 16018. The name Butler comes from the Potomac River. When settlers moved into this region in 1792, they named the river for General George Washington because he had led them there during their previous campaign against British forces. Today's town was founded in 1854 by landowner Isaac Sibley Butler and his son-in-law John Pemberton as a result of the Panic of 1857 when prices on farmland crashed. The first store opened in 1858 and by 1860 there were six stores and six homes in the village. In 1870, lumberyards started up and soon enough Butler was known as "the Lumber Capital of America." Beginning in the early 1800s, farmers here grew corn, beans, wheat and other vegetables; however, with great smoke stacks built to process coal tar products near present-day Market Street (then called State Route 24), furnace gases escaped into the air which caused numerous health problems among humans and animals around these times including an intense case of tuberculosis that killed many people before it was finally stopped in 1889 by enactment of legislation requiring proper ventilation for factories then existing within 500 feet of any building! Howeverler experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to ammunition production plants located along US 20A between Pittsburgh and Erie which produced over one million rounds of ammunition per day alone! Many generals who fought during World War II were born or raised here including Patton (US Seventh Army Commander) Alexander Vandegrift ( commander Caribbean theater), Dwight Eisenhower ( Supreme Commander Allied Forces South Europe) etcetera. After 1945 local businesses slowly declined as manufacturing left for new locations; however some survived until becoming defunct such as Dressmaker's Shop which still stands on East Market Street today; Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company which closed its doors after more than sixty years ago but continues to be used as a meeting place for local officials; American Glass Company which operated out of an old garage on North Main Street until 1984 when it merged with another company to form what is now known as Penn Central Railroad Corporation; all three companies are still extant today but have since converted to subsidiary corporations
