The Coast Guard has been in operation in Butler, Pennsylvania since 1917. The first coast guard station was established at the mouth of the Susquehanna River, and eventually several other stations were set up throughout the state. In 1947, the state Legislature passed a bill that created the Butler-Clarion County Regional Coast Guard District. This district was to consist of Butler, Clarion, Carbonate, Huntingdon and Westmoreland counties. The district soon became an important part of the coast guard system due to its location and resources. The headquarters for the regional coast guard district were located in Butler until 1959 when they moved to Pittsburgh. The main purpose of the headquarters move was to allow for more centralized control over resources and increased efficiency. Additionally, it allowed for better communication between stations across the state. In addition to their duties as a regional coastguard district, officers of the local police departments also serve as members of the border security unit within the regional coast guard district. This unit is responsible for providing law enforcement services along Pennsylvania’s borders with Maryland and Delaware. Today, there are multiple Coast Guard stations located throughout Butler County including: Station 10 (formerly called Pembina), Station 15 (formerly known as Clearwater Beach), Station 16 (formerly known as White Sands Lake), Station 21 (formerly known as Moon Cove) and Station 23 ( formerly known as Lewes). These stations provide law enforcement services along with assistance with Search and Rescue missions when needed. Additionally, there are also pleasure boats available which can be used for patrols or fishing trips around Butler County’s many lakes and rivers

Butler, Pennsylvania is a small town in Fayette County,Pennsylvania and has a population of just over 9,000 people. The name Butler comes from the French butte that is located in the town. The first families to live in Butler were the Potters and the Smiths. In 1810, John Butler founded the village of Butler on a piece of land he had purchased from David Potter. In 1827, John Wetherbee built what is now known as Wetherbee Hall in Butler. On December 3rd, 1874, Butler was incorporated as a borough by order of Governor Andrew Johnson. Butler was once known for its lace-making industry which produced millions of yards of fabric each year. Today most residents are engaged in agriculture or manufacturing with some small businesses also existing within the community. Some notable landmarks within Butler include Wetherbee Hall, Joe's Furniture Store and Old Market House which are all still standing today and houses local government services such as city hall and elections office.

Butler was first settled by Nicholas Butler in 1795 after he arrived from Ireland with his family. He named his new community after himself* – butlerstown – because he thought it would be more likely to receive grants from local governments if their name matched that of their locality.* After several years living in nearby Lebanon Township*, Nicholas decided that he needed more space so he moved his family permanently to what is now known as Butler Township in 1799.* By 1802, Nicholas had erected two gristmills along Buffalo Creek* near present-day downtown *; these mills were among the first large factories built in western Pennsylvania *. The mills produced shoes, clothing, flourishes (textiles made from flax or wool), cheesecloth *and other goods*. From these beginnings through 1860*, much of what is now known about Butler history can be traced back thanks to documentation provided byNicholas’ heirs*. The following year saw significant progress when Andrew Mellon† offered financial assistance towards developing new industries within newly annexed Erie County; this move helpedurb openings at nearby blast furnaces which led directlytothe foundingof Butlers shoe manufactory† (*1861). Other major advances during this time includebutter churning† (*1862), pioneering dyeing process developed at nearby Drexel Institute† (*1863) and manufactureofthe world’s first knit cap(*1865). Howeverlers fortunes changed dramatically during World War I when war-time production shifted away from munitions towards consumer goods such as gasoline tanks and machine guns†(*1915).
