The Butler Air Force Base was established in 1940 as a training ground for the United StatesAAF. In 1951, the base was renamed Butler Army Air Field and became operational as an air force base. The base played a significant role in the Korean War, providing airlift to soldiers and supplies in support of the US effort. After the war, Butler AFB grew to become one of the largest USAF bases in the world with its primary mission being aerial refueling operations. The USAF also established a wing at Butler Airport for flying cadet units and operated several other facilities on site including an armory, a aircraft hangar, and an agricultural research center. In 1970, after years of growth within the USAF, it was decided that Butler would be mothballed and placed into storage status. However, because of its importance to American military preparedness over the years it was not until 1990 when plans were made to convert Butler AFB into an open-air research hub focused on aeronautics and aerospace engineering studies. This decision marked a turning point for Butler AFB as it slowly began to emerge as one of America’s leading scientific institutions within its field. Today, Butler AFB is home to one of America’s most respected aeronautics laboratories, The Wright-Patterson National Aeronautics & Space Administration Research Laboratory (Wright-Pattman), which conducts cutting-edge research in many fields including space exploration; environmental science; homeland security; aviation; nuclear physics;and more.

Butler is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania. The population was 3,746 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. The first white settlers in what is now Butler County were David and Anna Butler, who arrived on horseback from Maryland in 1795. They named their land for General James Butler, a hero of the Revolutionary War. The butlers continued to farm there until 1815 when they sold their land to John Fenton and his family. In 1824, Fenton donated the town site to the United States government as part of a national agricultural donation program known as the Gadsden Purchase. Butler was incorporated as a borough on December 15, 1847. Its first mayor was George Cushman (1830-1902). The borough had a population of less than 1 thousand until it grew rapidly during World War II due to wartime manufacturing interests in nearby Youngstown and Monmouth Counties. During World War II, much of Butler's industrial output went into production at Connellsville Steel Works which still employs many people today. Other notable industries such as textiles, plastics, aluminum and other heavy products were located elsewhere during those years; but due to the war effort, industry gradually replaced farms as the mainstay of local employment throughout most of eastern Pennsylvania and northwestern Ohio counties after 1945 thanks in large part to federal funds given out under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs
Butler was founded in 1798 by Nicholas Butler. The town grew rapidly, and in 1824 it became the county seat of Butler County. In 1847, the courthouse was moved from Clinton to Butler, and in 1868 the first post office was established. In 1930, the name of the county was changed from Butler to Potter County.
