Butler, Pennsylvania is a city located in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Butler County. It was founded in 1795 and named after Abner Butler, a brigadier general in the American Revolutionary War. The first settler in Butler was James Robertson. In 1833, John Ritchie built a log cabin on what is now Main Street in the town of Northfield and called it "Ritchie's Cabin". A post office was established at that location on November 1, 1833, and remained open until July 5th of 1875. In 1836 David Potter moved to Butler from Huntingdon Township and platted what is now Potter's Landing on the Scioto River near present day downtown Butler. Potter's Landing would become one of the most important commercial points along the river during this time period as it served as both a landing for goods shipped downriver by boat and also as a place where people could purchase goods necessary for their agricultural pursuits such as flour and other cereals. However, development along Main Street did not begin until after 1850 when General Canby constructed his brick courthouse which attracted business away from Potter's Landing. That same year saw the opening of "northern state Normal School" which would play an important role in keeping education affordable for many during this time period. One of the earliest African American residents of Butler was Solomon Blanchard who moved from Ohio to live with his family in Butler around 1840s-50s following emancipation there that happened soon after America gained its independence from Great Britain. He later became one of only twowhite men to serve as Mayor of Philadelphia (the other being Amos Brown). During World War II much activity took place within town limits including ammunition production at Second Battle Mines Ammunition Plant; housing construction by Bethlehem Steel Corporation on Race Creek Drive; manufacturing operations by Du Pont de Nemours & Co.; automotive production at Ford Motor Company’s Two Rivers Division; wire transfer operations handled by National Cash Register Company

Butler is a small town in eastern Pennsylvania, located on the Susquehanna River. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Altoona-Johnstown, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Butler has been home to a number of famous people, including George Butler, Jr., who founded DuPont and became one of its most successful executives; and David Littman, an American business magnate who co-founded Litton Industries. Butler was founded in 1787 by George Butler, Jr., one of the original settlers in what would become Altoona-Johnstown. In 1825, Captain James Kappe of the United States Revenue Cutter "Liberty" donated land to form what would become Butler Township. The town was incorporated on December 12th, 1827. The first store in town opened on Main Street in 1829. By 1840, there were 10 businesses open in Butlertown with a total population of 2,500 residents. During that time period currency used to be traded between traders for goods and services received from others in this area such as agriculture or manufacturing. In 1850–51 butler's post office served 9 residents and handled mail from Johnstown and surrounding areas as well as messages sent to nearby towns such as Dunmore and Shamokin Heights which had been established since 1800s by refugees from British America during the Revolutionary War efforts against Great Britain In 1865–66 Butlers three churches were built: Trinity Methodist Church (1865), Presbyterian church (1867), and First Baptist church (1868). These churches were among many built throughout rural Pennsylvania during this era due to increased missionary activity within Christianity after the end of slavery in America following the Civil War emancipation proclamation issued by Ulysses S Grant on April 14th 1865 . On July 5th 1895 Mayor Averell Francis announced that he will run for Congress but he only received 8 votes out of over 100 cast when his term expired on October 3rd 1995 . On November 6th1995 Mayor Francis announced his candidacy for Borough Council but lost to incumbent Art Smith by just one vote . After mayor Francis' loss two other candidates also ran for Borough Council positions but neither received any votes Three years later Mayor Harry Weiler announced his intention to run for Borough Council again but lost again to incumbent Art Smith In 1998 Mayor Harry Weiler announced his intention to seek reelection as Borough Councilor however he only received five votes out of twelve cast when election took place on November 3rd 1998
Butler was founded in 1795 by George Butler, a Quaker who opened a small general store. The town grew quickly and became the county seat of Butler County in 1802. In 1824, the state of Pennsylvania declared Butler to be part of the new western tier of states that were created as a result of the Compromise of 1850. The population growth continued until the early 20th century when there was little growth due to factors such as industry and an increasing number of people living in towns outside the county.
