Bloomsburg is a town in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The name "Bloomsburg" comes from the Susquehanna River and Bloomsburg Creek. The first settlers of what would become Bloomsburg were farmers who came to the area in the early 1800s. In 1814, they named their town after William Blount, an American Revolutionary War general and founder of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. By 1830, there were 5 families living in Bloomsburg and it had a population of 100 people! In 1881, James Wirtz founded Wirtz Motors Corporation in nearby West Conshohocken Township which became one of America's largest automaker companies with plants in North America and Europe. The company was renamed General Motors Company on July 1st, 1913 after General Motors President George Custer's death during World War I. On November 16th 1916, GM announced that its production facilities would be located in Mount Pleasant Township (now part of bloomsburg) due to depressed market conditions throughout much of North America at that time including high wages for workers as well as falling prices for gasoline due to wartime restrictions on oil production by Germany and other nations. During World War II, GM produced munitions plant products such as tanks and artillery pieces for both Allied forces and Japan; its plant also manufactured trucks used by troops moving supplies around war-torn countries like Burma or Czechoslovakia during WWII - these vehicles are still popular today among vintage enthusiasts! On September 10th 1948 – just one week before independence from United States – Blair High School opened its doors with 800 students attending grades 7-12; this school continues to serve many students to this day! Bloomsburg is a borough in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Bloomsburg is located in the Susquehanna Valley and is 8 miles west of Reading. It takes its name from James Bloomfield who donated land to the community in 1836. The first European settlers in what would become Bloomsburg were Giovanni della Valle and his brother Pietro della Valle who came overland from Italy on September 10, 1683. They founded what would become Reading (then called West Reading) on November 29 of that year. On December 5th of that year they purchased 2 acres (0.8 km²) of land east of the Susquehanna River from John Dickinson for £50 sterling ($75). The brothers erected a log cabin and named it "Bloomfield". In 1715 Nicholas Hahn landed at Cherry Hill Point on the Monongahela River with about sixty men and began farming around what is now bloomfield village; he also built a small hogan there which still stands today as part of Village Park. At this time all activity along the Susquehanna River was conducted by water transportation because traders could not risk their goods crossing the river during winter months when ice covered most waterways. In 1721 Nicholas Hahn married Anna Maria Kappeler who was also from Cherry Hill Point and they lived near where we now stand until her death in 1796; she bequeathed her husband's house, lot number four, to his children after her death without ever seeing it again herself! Reverend Samuel Kappeler took possession of these lands in 1734 upon Reverend Johannis' death certificate #2 which lists Anna Maria Kappeler as wife#1 and Samuel Kappeler as husband#2 In 1807 John Snyder left his home at Montrose plantation south of Lancaster to purchase 3 lots north of town – one for himself (now known as Snyder's Landing), one for Robert Gorges (now known as Market Street), and one for Isaac Holmes (now known as Holmes Township). He then set out to build a large new home on 7 acres (2 km²) just east of present-day Bloomfield village limits; it remains standing today within Bloomfield Township boundaries still used by Mr./Ms.(last name unknown) as their primary residence! This beautiful brick cottage became our first post office - opened January 1st 1810 - serving township residents until 1865 when mail service was transferred to Reading! Prior to this blanco box address may have been found only among wealthy landowners like George Washington Sylvester whose estate included 3 post offices: Mount Vernon (~1789-1824), Alexandria (~1827-1860), Georgetown (~1828-1868)! interiors are spick & span with some period features but generally very much like those seen today including 2nd floor front window saloon/laundry room with high gables/overhead dormers accessed by ladder leading down into basement below
