Bloomsburg is a town in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,241 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The original town site was laid out in 1784 by Colonel Robert Morris and named for his daughter Blanche. When the land was purchased by the government in 1806, it was renamed Clearfield Township and again in 1821 as Clearfield County when it became a county of Pennsylvania. In 1828, Clearfield Township merged with neighboring Potter Township to form Bloomsburg Borough. The borough disbanded in 1888 and its assets were sold to make way for what would become Steelton-Blairstown Borough which had its start on November 1, 1898 when Steelton-Blairstown became an independent city. The first settler in what would become Bloomsburg was John Palfrey who arrived from Connecticut on October 10, 1784. He built a log cabin near where he now resides on Old Jameson Road just east of present day State Routes 331 and 376A (now known as Union Avenue). Colonel Robert Morris also settled here around this time and made himself useful to the local economy by becoming a surveyor and land agent for various Washington Territory governments including that of Pennsylvania. As township grew larger, Palfrey's Cabin came into use as both residences and offices for select township officers such as treasurer, court recorder and justice of peace; all during the early 1800s before homes were replaced with frame buildings throughout the township beginning around1800 In 1806 when US President James Ketchum issued a proclamation creatingClearfield Township within Washington Territory due to increasing numbers of settlers seeking access to new land outside of Philadelphia - primarily those from Maryland - Colonel Robert Morris immediately offered his portion of donation (then totaling over 640 acres) bordering Potterstown Creek southward along present day I-376A (known then as Butler Street) until such time that additional land could be donated or acquired nearby; much later being supplemented with 640 more acres adjacent to Pottersville Creek northward approximately three miles beyond today’s village limits – thus forming what would become Clearfield County PA This donation created initial tension between Col Robert Morris & Gov John Dickinson because Mr Dickinson felt that he had been “deserter[ed]” from Congress during the very political tumult surrounding Executive Order 13284 which ordered western Pennsylvanians west of Allegheny Mountains must leave their homes within sixty days – not having received proper compensation for his lost lands&property like many other farmers & individuals located there . This order caused great hardship especially amongst those struggling ~ many died trying to find safety & shelter while others found themselves homeless & penniless ADVERTISING less than two weeks after President James Ketchum signedExecutive Order 13284 ~ about one-third (.3%)of all population living west of Alleghenies were forced Vacate their Homes~~one reason given for this large number being lack of food rations resulting from WTP closure . Many people who remained behind faced extreme poverty~including somefamilies whose men had enlisted in US Army during War Betweenthe US And Great Britain . For these families ~food wasn't an option even though they could have taken oaths saying they Wouldnot suffer Depredation ..... They formed small bands called "Red Coats" which protected themselves against Indians etc Today we drive past former proprietary boundaries into adjoining Potterstown Borough just east thereof on old Butler Street~~and wonder how things may have been different if onlyamacounty officials hadn't ceded so much territory back then .....what would our history be otherwise?
