The first people to live in Bloomsburg were the Lenape Native Americans who came there from upstate New York in what is now Delaware County in 1678. In 1795, a group of settlers from Philadelphia led by Nicholas Easton founded the town on land they had bought from the Lenape. The town was named after one of Easton's brothers, William Bloomfield (1751-1825). In 1811, John Fitzpatrick donated land to make way for a college which became known as Brown University. The town continued to grow rapidly through annexation by other towns until it reached its current size of 12,756 residents in 2010. It has been home to many famous people over the years including: James Kapp (the founder of Kapp Brothers candy company), George Washington Carver (a noted agriculturist and inventor), poet Anna Freud (who spent time living in Bloomsburg during World War II as a result of US war effort recruitment efforts), and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump Jr.'s father Barron Trump (a real estate developer who also owns properties near Bloomsburg).
