This led Admiral Halsey to order two large ships called USS Texas (1925) and USS Oklahoma (1926) which became known as "the big three." These new vessels were able to fight battles off shore while also carrying troops and supplies back home. During World War II, submarines played an important role in every theater of war including Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor which forced us into open conflict with that country.
