Ammunition sales also boomed during this time as both men and women turned to firearms for self-defense purposes. As gun culture continued to grow throughout America, so too did Newtown's relationship withguns. In 1854, local jeweler John Stevens established a store on Main Street that became one of the most popular retailers for handguns in Philadelphia (Atkins & Company later took over Stevens'). From here on out, pistols would become an integral part of everyday life for many residents in Newtown – whether purchasing or keeping them safe and sound.

In 1840, Bethlehem also became the site of one of the most important battles of American history when General Forbes’s force clashed with units under General Robert Ewing at Monmouth Court House during the War for Independence. In 1861, after Confederate forces burned down Philadelphia's Union Hall, General Ulysses S Grant ordered his army to march through central Pennsylvania to reach Baltimore via Gettysburg before turning around and marching back into Virginia en route to Richmond. On November 15th, 1861, while traveling through central PA towards Gettysburg on US 14 near present-day Slippery Rock Lake Dam Road (now US 11), Confederate soldiers discovered a small town named Bethlehem just west of Chambersburg onidy Creek - they burned it without warning or provocation as part of their attempt to destroy any evidence linking Grant's army to secessionist activity in this region
