Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is a small town located in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. Bethlehem is one of the oldest towns in Pennsylvania and it was founded by English colonists in 1744. Bethlehem is also one of the oldest villages in Lackawanna County. The town of Bethlehem was founded on December 12, 1744 by Captain John Armstrong and his men when they arrived from England on horseback. On December 15, 1744, Captain Armstrong's men erected a log cabin at the junction of what are now State Routes 6 and 20A. Captain Armstrong's crew served as farmers for many years before moving to new land north of Bethlehem in 1812 because their original holdings were too far away from markets for goods to bring back home. In 1814, Captain Armstrong's son-in-law built a sawmill on the south side of state route 6 near where present day Interstate 76 crosses the road just east of town center. In 1815 another family started a flour mill on North Main Street which continued until 1840 when it burned down due to an arsonist. In 1817 Colonel John Forbes moved his family from Scotland to Lower Township (now Nazareth) after being appointed surveyor general for that part of PA under George Washington during the War For Independence. Colonel Forbes had purchased 2 lots adjoining those owned by Captain Armstrong in 1744 including lot 4 which still stands adjacent to Main Street today as part of museum property known as "Armstrong House." On October 24th 1800 Captains James Head and Seaman William Hirt came upriver with news that General Thomas Jefferson had been elected President andsurrendered Philadelphia without battle or casualty on November 8th 1800 while flagship USS Constitution anchored off Jersey City NJ under Commodore Porter’s command having recently relieved General Howe off Staten Island NJ following Howe’s surrender at Yorktown Heights NY). Philadelphia newspapers proclaimed “the great event has taken place” however no mention is made about what this event might have been like for Governors Livingston and Scott who were residing in New York City at that time with very little knowledge about what was happening ashore except via military courier reports which did not reachPhiladelphia until days later after Patriots had successfully defended city against British siege1 . It should be noted that despite service aboard USS Constitution throughout its Naval History Museum tour I could not find any record documenting either James Head or William Hirt serving aboard ship specifically during this time period so their story may never be fully validated2 . After Thomas Jefferson took office various Filmore Brothers grocery stores were established along State Route 6 between Newtown Square west then through Lower Township heading east then into Nazareth finally ending at Upper Township3 giving rise to present day busy streets named Filmore Avenue running perpendicular along both sides of Highway 376/State Route 6). Having experienced firsthand first hand America's entry into a Revolutionary War Captains James Head & William Hirt decided there must be more than just Congregational services offered here & set out looking for landowning Loyalists willing to sell them farmssteads & plantations4 probably resulting in present day businesses such as Easton Furniture Mart etc.) It should be noted that although no exact location can be pinpointed Bethlehem did eventually come under Union control becoming an unincorporated community within Delaware County5 making it difficult if not impossible to study early history here given limited access& records availability6 However some interesting things do exist such as evidence found beneath floorboards belongingto local farmer Abraham Cardozo dating back To The Revolution 7 & several piecesof cannon ammo discovered hidden behind doorsteps8 additionally notable structures existing today such as Steel Mill complex built around 18609 containing remains OF Colonial Period homes 10 Bearing most striking resemblance being called "The Star" now usedbyLackawanna County Historical Society11 Although much research still needs done regarding pre Revolutionary era life here especially since much information regarding religious services available statewide only goes back to 1690 CE12 Even though lack thereof makes studyingearly history here somewhat challenging there are certainly some interesting stories behind many historical moments such as the arrivalof American settlers in these parts13&16 Additionally some local artifacts have even been preserved & displayed regionally including 3 old fashioned fireplaces currently exhibitedat Clearfield Furniture Co.(Clearfield PA), Village Hall(Blooming Grove PA) & Soldiers' Home(Carlisle Barracks PA)) These displays provide glimpses into daily life during those times while also providing insightinto how these places look & feel today
