The coffee shop was founded by Mr. and Mrs. John Kapp and their children, John and Peggy Kapp. The coffee shop was open every day from 7am to 7pm starting back then. In 1969, Mr. Kapp's daughter Shirley opened her own smallbatch coffee business called "Shirley's Small Batch Coffee." This business was started by Shirley Kapp with help from her father Mr. Kapp. The first shipment of beans from Shirley's Small Batch Coffee was placed into storage at an old chemical plant near Pittsburgh until it could be reopened as a small batch coffee roastery in 1984 by Ruprecht & Associates Pty Ltd., which remains the current operator today! Bethel Park was first settled by Germans in 1784 and became a borough in 1853. The name "Bethel" comes from the German word "Bethlehem". The first churches were built in Bethel Park during the early 1800s. The Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in 1812, and it remains one of the largest Protestant denominations in Pennsylvania today. By 1870, there were two Baptist churches as well. In 1889, Bethel Park became an independent borough and adopted its current name - Bethel Park grew rapidly after becoming an incorporated municipality within only 10 years. The growth of Bethel Park came about because of various factors including access to cheap land, good transportation options, and easy access to jobs outside of Pittsburgh. Many residents worked on farms or construction sites throughout the town until World War II when many people moved into newly developed suburbs such as Allentown and Erie while Steel City continued to grow at record rates. After the war ended, Bethel Park began to decline again as more new homes were built and businesses closed down due to technological advances like automobiles which made life much easier for people living outside of Pittsburgh. However, over time some improvements have been made such as updated infrastructure which has helped make town more economically viable once again - now it's a thriving community with plenty of opportunities for education and employment alike.
