The Pennsylvania National Guard has a rich history in Bethel Park. The Guard was first organized on November 3, 1776, as the Second Battalion of the Township of Huntingdon's Rangers. The battalion was reorganized on December 12, 1777 and became the Third Battalion of the Township of Huntingdon's Rangers. In 1814, the Third Battalion was redesignated as the Fourth Battalion of the Township of Huntingdon's Rangers and served under General George Washington during his military campaigns in America. On July 4, 1830, Fourth Battalion disbanded and its members were absorbed into Second Battalion which continued to serve until 1881 when it was merged with First Battalion to form Second Regiment of militia from Bethel Park. The regiment served in various engagements throughout the American Civil War including battles at Monmouth (July 2-3), Gettysburg (October 14-15), Mineola (December 16) and Yorktown (March 24-25). After the war ended in 1865, Second Regiment disbanded and its members were absorbed into First Regiment which continued to serve until 1881 when it also disbanded.
Bethel Park is a small town located in the Susquehanna Valley of Pennsylvania. It was named for Elijah Bethel, an early settler. The community has since grown to include over 1,000 residents and spans foursquare miles. The area that now makes up Bethel Park was first settled by Germans in the late 18th century. In 1792, Stephen Girard bought land here and founded the town of Girardstown on his farm. Because of this connection to Girardstown, Bethel Park was originally known as "Girardstown County". In 1951, when Pennsylvania lost its statehood, Bethel Park became part of Luzerne County. Today, Bethel Park is one of the most ethnically diverse communities in all of Pennsylvania – it has a population made up of both German-American and Italian-American residents as well as a sizable African American community. There are also several dozen Native Americans living in or around the town. The first organized National Guard units were raised in 1792 as militias to protect American citizens during the French and Indian War. In 1812, the Militia Act created an Army of the United States with militia troops being fielded in all states. The National Guard was disbanded in 1907 after World War I when military service was re-established as a reserve force for wars to come. In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt called for a national emergency decreeing that all state militias be mobilized for federal service; this became known as the New Deal National Guard program. Theprogram increased troop presence in America during World War II because of mandatory enlistments and training requirements; however, it also led to many soldiers being deployed without their families back home. After the war, there was a renewed interest in preserving and expanding the National Guard due to concerns over potential civil unrest and modern warfare. On September 20, 1964, President Lyndon B Johnson signed into law Publius 94-202 which provided for membership card enrollment in state guard units paralleling army ranks/units while reservists served regularly or as needed through political subdivisions such as police departments or fire companies; this change became effective on December 1st 1960. Today, there are more than 21 million members active duty within the National Guard across 41 states—an increase of 3 million from 2016 alone! Bethel Park was founded in 1786 by Reverend John Bethel and his wife Sarah. The community took its name from the place of their birth, Bethel in Scotland. Reverend Bethel had been sent to America as a missionary by the Scottish Episcopal Church, and he soon established himself in what is now Bethel Park. In 1814, the village was incorporated as a borough. After World War II, it became an urban area and experienced significant growth during the late 20th century. The most recent incarnation of Bethel Park – which currently includes portions of Mount Lebanon and Uniontown – began taking shape in the early 21st century when developers purchased large tracts of land around Prospect Hill Cemetery. The earliest known mention ofBethel Park dates back to 1786, when Reverend John Bethel settled there with his wife Sarah. At that time, “bethe” (a word meaning “place”) referred to a small piece of land near where they lived on Beaver Creek Township Road 1A. Reverend Bethel soon found success farming this valuable property, providing for both himself and his pioneering wife Sarah. With their four children born at home: John (1780-1842), Margaretta (1784-1858), William (1800-1872), and Anna (1802-1882), these pious Christians were able to build up a strong church and social life within their own community before moving on to other endeavors throughout America’s emerging colonies: Pennsylvania particularly! In 1814, after years of hard work among various religious groups across central Pennsylvania, Rev John Bethell organized an effort to establish a new congregation within what is now Bethlehem Township under the leadership of George Washington Jones Sr.. This endeavor led him first to purchase 2 acres on Nanticoke Road east of present day Prospect Hill Cemetery; from here he developed what would eventually become one of Bethlehem Township’s most prestigious neighborhoods:Bethesda Heights! Bethel Park was founded in 1798 by Presbyterian missionaries, and was the first Protestant settlement in what is now Pennsylvania. The settlers were Methodist reverts from England who had been drawn to the region by its rich mineral resources. They named their new village after God's Chosen Place, Bethel, in present-day Massachusetts. The original town of Bethel Park was located on a small plateau situated about two miles east of present-day Altoona. A log cabin served as the first home of the town's founders and they built other homes over time. In 1820, a post office was established at Bethel Park and mail service started there soon thereafter. In 1825, an act of Congress created the County of Allegheny and Bethel Park became part of it. In 1828, a public school opened in Bethel Park and remains in use today. In 1829, a canal was constructed through bethel park linking it with nearby Altoona and providing access to local water sources for the town's residents. This canal also helped spur development in bethel park as businesses began to arise around it such as grocery stores, lumber yards, hotels and churches. The canal also connected bethel park with neighboring towns which made it easier for villagers to get goods to market without having to go farfetched distances or leave their homes overnight. In 1861, when Pennsylvania became a statehood movement countrywide following Ulysses S Grant's victory in the American Civil War, bethelial park voted unanimously to become part of that state as well. Because of this vote (and because Altoona refused annexation into Pennsylvania), bethelial park remained within Pennsylvania until its annexation into Duquesne County effective July 1st 1893 - making it one of only four municipalities left standing from Allegheny County when that county merged into Duquesne County .
