Bethel Park is a small town in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,799 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bethel Park was founded in 1795 by farmers Abraham and Sarah Jacobs as a community on what is now the north side of Canonsburg Road. In 1836, it became part of the new township of Bethlehem. In 1861, Bethel Park was renamed to honor General Israel Putnam and his wife Esther Hicks Putnam. The Jerseys settled in this area in 1800 and platted what is now Bethel Park into lots they purchased from Germans who had come to live there during the American Revolution. The first store in Bethel Park opened on May 5, 1824 by Wm Halsey & Bros., makers of corduroys and other clothing products. In 1840, Isaac Nevin established a gristmill that powered an early sawmill along Canonsburg Road. By 1850, three stores were open: James Burton’s Store (now Wexford Drug), Fenton’s Grocery Store (later Ritchey’s Hardware) and John Beall’s Store (now Jeter's). In 1860, just two years after its incorporation into Bethlehem Township, Bethel Park had seven businesses including four stores; one store operated out of a home which still stands today: Samuel Myers ran a general store until his death in 1865; then Harry Whitman took over Myers' business; Irving Roth ran an ammunition store from 1863 until 1865; Elisha Mann operated a hotel for nine months from 1865 until it burned down; finally George Auner built his own grocery store which he called “The Girdle Shop” from 1868 to 1870 at 611 East Canonsburg Road until it burned down also in 1870). In 1879, Abram Tilden donated land to build Grovetown Cemetery where people can still visit today. This cemetery served as both public graveyard for residents within Bethlehem Township as well as individuals who died outside Ofstedt Township or who were buried elsewhere before their burial within Bethlehem Township limits could be arranged or paid for by the government subject to certain restrictions such as those placed on cemeteries by state law at that time including no burials between May 1st and October 15th each year Nor within one mile of any school or post office...Bethel Park became an incorporated village under Act No 7413 on November 3rd 1889 with Abrams Tilden being elected President pro tem...On March 12th 1902 Borough Council adopted Resolution No 11 defining boundaries for Village Limits....The total number of inhabitants living within bounds then numbered 914...After World War I when regulations changed governing eligibility for military service/ leave etc., many residents left village limits due to these changes Homelessness increased throughout 1920's so Borough Council passed Resolution #12 establishing ordinances regulating homeless persons living within bounds but this ordinance never went into effect because it conflicted with state law which continued allowinghomelessness without prior registration It wasn't until 1927 when housing began popping up all around town like nowhere else thanks largely to Josephine Whitehead who started building houses near her workplace on North Street industrial park across from Perkiomen Lake while her husband Ed filled them with straw bales so they wouldn't rot...By 1934 there were 10 homes built - most surrounding Whitehead's property)...In 1939 house numbers started rising steadily with 33 homes being built off South Street NE cornering Elmira Avenue joining forces with 33 more homes bought adjacent property east/west making an 88 acre lot originally known as "West Side". At current count there are 131 structures located within borough limits contained inside 350 acres +/- producing $32M annually tax revenues generated)...Today nearly every family has their own home here surrounded by gardens,...Some may remember going door-to-door selling newspapers back during those days while others may know about Sunrise Coffee shop next door which closed its doors several years ago but customer service remains very friendly despite not having been open that long...Today many things have replaced those early days like physical education classes offered through Monmouth County Community College providing some much needed retail jobs near Hebron Catholic School across street while also supplementing local police departments functions such as lending officers weapons range time during gun shows held at nearby Fairfield Armory According to the 2000 Census resultsBethel Park had 7800 residentsscripture says 8100 however according to 2011 census report 7796 people live here
