In 1961, the Township of Bethel passed a resolution authorizing the establishment of a municipal bus transportation service within the township limited to local residents only. On October 15 of that year, Bethel Park's first municipal bus route began serving residents of the township; it ran between School Street and Maple Avenue. The buses served exclusively local residents until 1984 when they became available for use by townspeople as well. In 1984, Bethlehem Electric Light Corporation bought out General Electric Company's interest in Mordecai Block and ceased production of espresso beans at their new manufacturing plant; this left Bethel Park with sole responsibility for distribution and marketing their espresso products. Bethel Park was founded in 1754 by the Reverend John Bethel and his wife, Ruth. The town was named after a small village in Scotland, which the Rev. Bethel had visited while on a missionary journey. The first settler in Bethel Park was James Denny, who arrived in 1756. Denny's heirs sold the land to settlers in 1760. By 1814, there were over 100 residents living in Bethel Park. In that year, the United States Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of a national cemetery at Gettysburg National Military Cemetery. The graveyard served as the burial ground for American soldiers killed during World War II and other wars. In 1868, Bethel Park became part of Philadelphia County and experienced rapid growth due to its importance as a transportation center. During this time, industry began to take hold with mills manufacturing goods such as flour and cotton shirts; leather production; cheese production; and breweries producing beer, whisky, and soda water. The 20th century saw significant changes for Bethel Park when it came to population growth and development.
