Berwick is a small town in Pennsylvania that has been around for over 350 years. The town was named after the Battle of Berwick, which took place on December 12, 1746, during the American Revolution. Berwick is located in Bedford County and is home to around 9,000 residents. It is also the county seat of Bedford County. The first settler in Berwick was John Armstrong who arrived in 1754. In 1768, Alexander Watt built a cabin along the Susquehanna River. By 1800, there were 10 buildings in Berwick and it had a population of 50 people. During the early 19th century, many businesses operated in Berwick including a hotel, bakery, blacksmith shop and grocery store. The first school was established in 1812 and was called the Academy School. In 1828, a post office was founded at Berwick and remained active until 1915 when it became part of Lebanon Township. A few weeks after Pittsburgh’s incorporation as an city on April 14th 1853 (the same day as Bethlehem), two men from Edinburghshire – James Howie and Fergus MacMahon – set out from Glasgow to found what would become known as Pennsylvania Dutchtown on what is now State Road 2 near Potterstown; this location would later become downtownBerkeley Heights/ berkeley heights PA). Peter Hildebrandt (1810-1887) purchased about three-quarters of an acre of land north side Main Street just west of present day Market Square for $5 per acre back then! He did this with his brother Hermann Hildebrandt who managed most aspects including building roads/roadsides etc., irrigation systems etc., all while working day & night! As each family brought their own children into this wonderful community they helped form an excellent social fabric which continues today!!! Berwick is a borough in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,095 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Berwick was founded by George Washington and family during the French and Indian War on July 3, 1759 as Fort Duquesne. The town was named for General Edward Berwick who served in the American Revolution and won a military distinction for his actions at Monmouth Court House on August 29, 1777. The first settler in what is now Berwick was John Butler who arrived in 1759 with his family from England. In 1769 Captain David Howell purchased land east of the Susquehanna River from Sir William Penn for £1,000 cash plus 10 acres (4 ha) of woodland. At that time it covered an area of twelve square miles (30 km2). In 1800 Nicholas Lyon bought three-quarters of a mile (1 km) west of present-day Berwick from Captain Howell for £3 per acre (0.9 ha). He built several mills which continue to produce flour and other products to this day including Lyon's Mills #2 which closed in 1978. On February 14th, 1814 James Shields erected a post office at present-day Berwick; he had been appointed postmaster by Governor Georgeacross under Act No 587 of 1813 shortly after he had become acting Postmastergeneral upon the death of Samuel Mifflin Jr.. On November 3rd James Shields married Elizabeth Readhead at Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church where they were both baptized into Christianity two years earlier on October 12th, 1798. One year later they had their first son John who was born December 26th 1800 at home near present-day Northumberland Avenue and Wharton Street; he eventually became mayor of Berwick Borough when he ran for office in 1903/04 having replaced his father as Mayor in 1892/93 following his death suddenly while serving as Deputy Mayor position within Borough government.. In 1825–27 George Stephenson laid out a road or cart track called "The Northern Road" through what is now downtownBerwick between Wharton street and Delaware avenue - still extant today - linking Lancaster County with Bucks County via Markettown Township northward until it connected with Route 22 about 1½ miles (2 km) southbound near modern day Girard Street just past Southwark Elementary School before terminating near Union Station northwestward continuing until today's intersection with I-676 northeastward just past modern day University Avenue approximately one mile (1 km) southwestward beyond center field across Broad Street between Old Main building and Hennepin College building located on opposite side then along current route 20 eastward to its original terminus nearly 2 miles (3 km) southwestward just past current day intersection with I-680 northeastward just past modern day Park Ave
Berwick was founded in 1784 by John and Judith Berwick. The town was named after the Berwickshire village of Beyrick, which John had visited while on his journey to farm land in Pennsylvania. The Berwickshire surname is first mentioned in 1190 as Bigemar.
