Berwick, Pennsylvania was the site of a large military deployment in 1814. The troops were sent to quell a series of uprisings in the state.
Berwick, Pennsylvania is a small town located in Carbon County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,927 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first European to see and visit Berwick were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his brother Amerigo in 1524-25. They named it "Verrazzano" after their captain who had led them on their survey of the Susquehanna River Valley. In 1681, Colonel George Washington visited Berwick while on his way to battle at Yorktown. The first settler in Berwick was James Cook in 1768. He built a cabin on an isolated peninsula adjacent to the then known Monongahela River which he named "Cook's Peninsula." Cook's settlement failed due to lack of resources and with the onset of American Revolutionary War (1775-1783), Cook moved away from Berwick and never returned again although he left behind some artifacts that are still visible today including his crude log cabin and two logs for a wharf. In 1814, Judge James Finley erected what is now called Finley House as a hotel/inn near where he lived during most of his life until 1870 when he sold it to Samuel Morse who developed Pneumatic Telegraph Lines through it which later became Universal Telephone Service (UTS) headquartered here in 1920. UTS also built antennas for television transmission over PA lines right outside this house during World War II! A post office was established at Berwick in 1815, but no mail ever reached it because there was no road between Carbondale and Pittsburg until 1828 when Captain John Butler opened up the present primary route from Pittsburg via Carbondale and opened up mail service between those cities as well as between Pittsburgh, Bucks County, Philadelphia (via Reading), Northumberland County (via Cumberland), Delaware County (via Kentuckiana), New York State (Rochester) as far west as Syracuse! Numerous other businesses were established here such as Wernher von Braun’s High School; FirstEnergy Corporation; United States Steel; Singer Sewing Machine Company; Bethlehem Steel Works; Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Company; General Electric Company; DuPont Tire & Rubber Company etc., but all succumbed within less than 50 years of their establishment save for United States Paper company which continued operations until 1976 - one year after its original incorporation!

Berwick, Pennsylvania, is a town in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,738 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The original village of Berwick was laid out in 1798 and named for General George Washington's father-in-law, Sir William Berwick. In 1814, General James K. Polk's army established a winter encampment at what is now downtown Berwick after making an unsuccessful attempt to cross the Monongahela River at that location. The site became known as "The Great Camp" because it housed 4500 soldiers and their horses during the winter of 1814-15. In 1865, when Congress created York County from portions of Allegheny and Westmoreland counties, berwick became one of its first townships. Berwick has been a manufacturing center since the early 1800s with soapstone quarries being among its earliest businesses. A paper mill opened in 1828 and continued operation until 1954; this mill produced nearly all paper products consumed in America by 1860 including cash registers and checkbooks. Other early businesses included a Forge Works (1846) which manufactured cannons for the Ulysses S Grant Presidential Campaign;[1] Dennison & Company (1869), which supplied flour to local bakeries;[2] John Horney & Sons (1877), which manufactured agricultural implements;[3] Pfeffer Brothers' Warehouse (1901), which served as a general store;[4][5] and Wigglesworth Paper Company (1910). The town slogan back then was "Breadbasket Township". After World War II many factories closed but new companies came into town such as Allied Signal Corporation,[6][7][8][9] LyondellBasell Industries Inc., Ford Motor Company,[10][11][12], Mastercard Worldwide,[13], PennEast Steel Products Inc., Erieview Paper Mills Incorporated.[14], Allstate Insurance Companies plc., JCPenney Stores Incorporated., Duquesne University School District No.(Duquesne Area High School).[15](16)
Berwick was first settled in 1799 by John and Susannah Beiler. The Beilers were the parents of Major General James Beiler, who served as president of Pennsylvania from 1819 to 1827. In 1800, Nathaniel MacLean purchased land at present-day Berwick and built a log cabin on it. He named the settlement "MacLennan".
