The town became a center for coffee production and has been home to some of the most prestigious roasters in the world, including Peet's Coffee, Koffee Kampfabrik, and Wildcraft Coffee. Berwick also features a number of cafes and restaurants that serve coffee from local mills and farms. The history of coffee production in Berwick goes back to the early 1800s. In 1802, John Hargrave bought land near present-day Berwick and began growing coffee trees. By 1825, he had built a large mill on the riverbank which produced high quality beans. Over time, other entrepreneurs followed Hargrave into coffee business and the town grew rapidly around its mills. In 1957, Peet's purchased Hargrave's mill and began producing its own high-quality beans under the name Peet's Coffee. Today, Peet's Coffee produces some of the best-quality coffees in all of America. Koffee Kampfabrik opened its doors in 1978 as one of America's first specialty cafes devoted exclusively to roasted Kopi Gedeon beans. The company continues to produce world-renowned Kopi Gedeon coffees today at their location adjacent to Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium (www.pittsburghzooandaquarium). Wildcraft Coffee was founded by Rick Ziegler in 1990 as one of North American’s first artisanal roasters specialising in organic whole bean coffee.* In recent years wildcraft has become known for their unique flavor profiles involving both dark roastings (such as Sumatra) and light roasts (like Ethiopian Yirgacheffe).* *Wildcraft is no longer open but their beans are still sold online through their website

They used volcanic ash to produce a rich dark roast reminiscent of what we now enjoy. The Portuguese discovered Java in 1524 and started trading with India for spices. While they were travelling through Indonesia, they discovered some fruit trees growing on the island of Java which they began to trade for goods back home. In 1621 Dutch traders reachedJava and started trading with the natives there as well. Because Indonesian coffee beans were not yet roasted correctly, these Dutch traders found it difficult to get their hands on high-quality beans because the locals had perfected this process centuries earlier! Meanwhile, English traders began trading with Java in 1626 and soon realized that Indonesian coffee was much better quality than anything they had been getting from England at that time! In order to keep up with Dutch competition, English brewers decided to start roasting their own beans! This new process became known as “big break” Roast Coffee because it allowed for a higher yield per bean due to the extra time spent roasting them instead of grinding them fresh like other coffees did at that time! In 1795 French explorers discovered Java once again while visiting the region during their Voyage d’Or ( travels). After tasting this amazing variety of coffees from all over Asia they decided that Java must be added to France’s list of territories under Crown control! This led to Jakarta becoming one of the most important cities in Southeast Asia!!!

Berwick is named after George Washington Butler and his wife Deborah Leach Butler; they were natives of Berwick upon Tweeddale in Scotland. George Butler was born on October 20th, 1795 in Lancaster County and died January 10th 1861 in Pittsburghsylvania aged 73 years 5 months 8 days. Deborah Leach Butler was born December 14th 1798 in Monmouth County and died on May 30th 1865 aged 88 years 2 months 11 days; she married George Butler on September 25th 1825 at Kittanning Presbyterian Church near Philadelphia PA
