Berwick, PA is a small town located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. It straddles the border of Lancaster and York Counties. The area that would become Berwick was first settled by Germans in 1795. The town was incorporated on December 2, 1853. There were two schools in Berwick when it began to grow; one for white children and one for black children. In 1871 the first railroad reached Berwick, making it an important community within the region. In 1907, berwick had three hotels: The Mechanics Inn, The Overlook Hotel and The White Sands Hotel. In 1912 there were four churches: Presbyterian (founded in 1795), Methodist (founded in 1850), Lutheran (founded 1865), and Baptist (founded 1835). During World War II, Berwick was home to many manufacturing plants such as aircraft parts production at nearby Wright-Patterson AFB and shipbuilding at Johnstown Naval Shipyard. After the war ended, many of these companies closed down or relocated their operations to other locations around the country including Erie PA., Allentown PA., Wilkes-Barre PA., Scranton Pa., Altoona Pa., and Harrisburg Pa.).
