Berwick is a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,820 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first settler in Berwick was Nicholas Butler in 1795. The town was platted on December 12, 1800 by order of General George Washington as one of the towns within the new Northwest Territory. On November 15, 1809, it became part of the newly formed United States after its acquisition from Great Britain. In 1814, following battle between British and American forces near present-day Yorktown Heights, General John Forbes ordered all male residents over 16 years old to leave for fear they would turn into traitors and join the British army. A few weeks later, most of Berwick's men were able to return home but a group of about 100 Virginians who had remained behind were rounded up and mustered into military service as "Volunteers". This left an unbearable effect on Berwick's small population; many felt like their community had been destroyed without any warning or explanation. In 1818 Forbes granted amnesty to all remaining residents and allowed them to rebuild their homes and businesses as they pleased. In 1821 Bishop James Buchanan moved his episcopal see from Yorktown Heights to Berwick following his consecration there by George Washington in that year. At that time it was only a tiny village with a total population of around 50 people including 20 farmers; however soon afterward it began expanding rapidly due to increased immigration from surrounding counties which included much more developed villages such as Allentown (now Philadelphia), Bethlehem (now Easton), Pittston (now Whitehall), Scranton (now Wilkes-Barre), and Erie (now Canonsburg). The increase in population caused growth problems for local schools which could not keep up with enrollment demands; however Buchanan responded by opening two additional elementary schools in addition to his original three institutions - one for boys and one for girls - which helped solve this problem. By 1830 Berwick had become one of the largest settlements in Lancaster County with 2,000+ citizens living within its borders! As America grew increasingly complex politically during the 19th century there was an increasing demand for lawyers and other legal professionals; accordingly several prestigious law firms located in downtown Philadelphia mushroomed when they opened their doors specifically because they could offer berkshire immigrants ample opportunity to train as lawyers under highly experienced mentors while also profiting handsomely off their services!
