Berwick is a small town in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Berwick is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. It lies on the Allegheny River and has a rich history dating back to 1737 when it was known as "Bartonstown". In 1814, when it became part of Westmoreland County, Berwick acquired its present name. The town's first store opened in 1825 and until the late 1800s, most of the town's economic activity came from agriculture which included raising chickens, pigs and cows. Today, much of what makes Berwick unique is its proximity to Pittsburgh and its large concentration of college students and professionals.

Berwick, Pennsylvania is a small town located in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading area. The town was founded in 1798 by John and Susannah Parsons. In 1827 it became the county seat of Berks County. The first settler in what is now Berwick was Captain John Cooke who arrived in 1798 from Massachusetts with his family. He built a cabin on a hill overlooking the present-day town and named it after himself,Berwick Hill. Captain Cooke's descendants continue to live there to this day and are known as the "Parsons" of Berwick. In 1827, when Berks County was created, Berwick became its county seat. Over time, many smaller businesses were founded here including hardware store/grocery store (1868), dye house (1910), hotel (1912), post office (1915), bank (1920), carpenters shop (1924) and several schools including Northampton School District No 6 which served students from Kindergarten through 12th grade until 1978 then Huntingdon Valley School District No 5 which served students from Kindergarten through 8th grade until 1984). In 1907, Berwick Flood Control Commission merged with nearby Reading Borough to formReading Flood Control Authority which still serves as today's governing body for that community today. Today Berwick has a population of 2,914 people making it one of smallest townships in Pennsylvania but also one of its most vibrant communities with over 150 businesses and organizations operating within its walls!
In 1798, the town of Berwick was founded by settlers from Lancaster County. The first settler in Berwick was Nicholas White. The town was named for General George Washington, who had given the area to the government as a gift. In 1814, the U.S. Congress passed a bill creating a township within Berwick and giving it to David Sanger. The population of Berwick grew rapidly in the 1840s and 1850s due to migration from rural Pennsylvania into the growing town. By 1860, there were over 1,000 residents in Berwick.growth continued throughout the 19th century as new businesses and homes were built south of Market Street. During World War II, many local men worked on munitions plants in nearby Scranton or Pittston City. After war ended, many people returned to their families and townships during the postwar years until large-scale development began in the 1960s with central shopping malls and other commercial buildings becoming prevalent inBerwickville and other parts ofthetownscape
