Baldwin is a small town in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,368 at the 2010 census. Baldwin is part of the Harrisburg–Carlisle–York metropolitan area. The original land grant for Baldwin was in 1785 to Nicholas Baldwin and his wife Susannah Elliott. Nicholas had come overland from England as a young man and married Susannah in 1775. They farmed on their grant until 1814 when they sold it to John Foster and moved to what is now Uniontown Township (although part of Baldwin) due to the surveying error made by Captain George Washington during the construction of Fort Pitt. In 1827, John Foster's grandson, Isaac Foster took possession of the tract that makes up present-day Baldwin Township from his father-in-law John Goodspeed and laid out streets which run northwest to southeast through most of the community today. In 1832, Anthony Hicks joined forces with James Ligonier Jr., another settler in this area, in founding the first bank in what is now Baldwin Township: First National Bank (now Citizens Bank). In 1851 local sugarcane farmer Andrew McNaught founded an agricultural fairgrounds on current-day State Street just east of Fourth Street; this fairgrounds remain one of town's main attractions today. The post office was established here on February 14th, 1830 by Elder Daniel Webster with three others as trustees - Samuel Morse (the founder of America's first telegraph line), Elias Howe (a signer of the Declaration Of Independence), and Christopher Wirtz - all residents who were working on improving transportation methods at this time within Lancaster County. Mr Wirtz donated 1 acre adjoining his home lot across Third Street from where he lived for many years later - also called "Wirtz Place" - for use as a Post Office building fronting Fourth Streetscape today! One early resident who would live here longest – Elijah Porter – served two terms as President pro tempore for both houses of the Pennsylvania General Assembly starting in 1835 before moving back into Lancaster County following election results that year that showed him victorious despite being outnumbered 3-1 by incumbent David Lawrence! PorterAltogether Elijah served 8 years continuously including 2 terms as Speaker and then Majority Leader before retiring due to failing health just shy of his ninetieth birthday!
