On October 8th 1944 Unit 513962 embarked from Philadelphia Navy Yard bound for Reykjavik Iceland via Liverpool England where they arrived on October 15th 1944 after 7 days lay down which included cold weather conditions and darkness that lasted until November 1st 1944 when all units disembarked at Keflavik airport after spending four nights ashore disembarking their supplies and materiel arriving on November 4th 1944 aboard USS Essex (LPT 432) under Commanding Officer Lt Col Wm J Hoehn USNR who became Commander Physical Plant Department Detachment 2 US Army Air Forces Europe Second Lieutenant T B R Oesterlein USAAF Combat Crewman First Class USS Enterprise (AO-1) During their stay there Commander Hoehn made arrangements for ice cream sundae's for all enlisted men living on site

The town's citizenry served on two different fronts, one being in the Battle of Britain and the other being in Normandy. When John Baldwin settled in what is now Baldwin, Pennsylvania in 1795 he was a young man of twenty-one years. He had come from the town of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and purchased land on the north side of the Susquehanna River. The area that is now Baldwin was part of this property. In 1800 John bought another piece of land on the south side of the river, which included what is now the city of Baldwin. This purchase marked an important change for John as it made him one of the first white men to live in what is now downtown Baldwin. John's son, Samuel, also became interested in farming and started a farm near where Interstate 79 crosses the Susquehanna River. Samuel also founded a Methodist church here in 1814. In 1824 John's grandson Daniel died at age seventy-eight and his estate was divided among his five children: James (1820-1892), Margaret (1822-1900), John (1825-1912), Sarah (1827-1911) and Samuel (1829-1912). James inherited most of his father's holdings including much land on the south side of the Susquehanna River including what is today downtown Baldwin and parts of neighboring towns such as Cumberland, Easton, Allentown and Hazleton. James also founded two small churches here: First Presbyterian Church in 1830 and Second Presbyterian Church in 1836. The first building served as both a meeting house and school until 1870 when it burned down; however, Second Presbyterian still meets here today. Sarah inherited her father's holdings on the north side of Susquehanna River including what is now downtown Baldwin but she did not start living there until after she married George Washington Doleman around 1830. They lived together for about thirty years before he died around 1850; however she continued to live here until her death around 1904. She is buried at Trinity Episcopal Churchyard located just east off I 80 across from Third Street South between blocks C & D Streets in downtown Baldwin today under many tall trees next to Stroudsburg State University's main campus buildings!
