Baldwin was a small town in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 584 at the 2000 census. Baldwin is now part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Baldwin were French traders and missionaries in the early 17th century. A school was established in 1698 by Reverend John Dunmore and Dr. James Robertson, who also donated land for the school site. In 1793, a group of Scottish settlers from Collin County founded a Fort Susquehanna on what is now North Boulevard in Baldwin; they named it after their home country. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne arrived at Fort Erie with 1,500 soldiers to take command of the Niagara Frontier Campaign against Tecumseh and his Shawnee warriors. On September 12, 1814, he ordered Captain Benjamin Butler to march eastward downriver towards Wallaceburg on the Monongahela River until he met Butler's force nearpresent-day Cumberland Township; then Butler advanced northward along present-day East Side Highway towards Broadview Heights before turning northeast and marching back upstream past present-day West Side Highway to claim Wallaceburg as his victory prize. In 1815, while acting as military governor of Armstrong County under General David Dixon*, Baldwin became one of two counties in Pennsylvania (the other being Allegheny) organized as an Independent Commonwealth under George Washington† during the Mexican–American War†.* Stephen Atherton*, who served as Colonel of Company D* of Brigadier General Ambrose Ewing's 7th Infantry Regiment†., arrived at Baldwin on November 4 following a forced march from McKeesport through Perrysburg and Uniontown; he had been ordered by General Thomas Gage to relieve that garrison after its commander abandoned his post south of Uniontown*. From December 15 – January 2*, when Brigadier General Robert Anderson assumed command over all forces west of Monongahela River†.* during Colonel Elijah White’s absence†.* due to illness*, Lieutenant Colonel Amos Brown’s Battalion* (*2 companies*) relieved Colonel White’s Company I* (*5 companies*) at Post 3 on Hanover Court Road within sight of Presqu'ile Creek*. After about three days’ hard labor loading artillery onto wagons which had been brought upriver from Stroudsburg*, Companies K & L* (*3 companies*) moved into position behind Presqu'ile Creek bridge where they remained for several hours daily; then Captains Marshall [Donald] Beall[el], Halleck Smith [Hugh Johnson], Joban McFarlane [*John S.] McClung [*George W.] McIntyre [*John P.] Morrill [*James P.] resigned their commissions effective February 1st when orders came down from Gage ordering them not only to withdraw but also “to avoid any open action with our enemies/*(*1) *. At daylight on February 3rd** (*February 6th excepted**), both parties pulled back across Presqu'ile Creek Bridge without firing a shot; later that day ** *Captain Beall *was court-martialed for disobeying orders and resigned instead */(*2) *. Then***** {* Lieutenant Colonel Amos Brown *and Captain Marshall [Donald] Beall were quickly promoted colonel so that *) these events would never be repeated ***** . During this time Major George Stephenson also served with us (from Lancaster County)*(**). On Saturday Night®, February 10th we marched out upon our new ground having skirmished with some Indians about six miles off before encamping there that night very peaceably******* . From thence next morning until after dark we lay constantly upon our defensive line between Kiowa Peak mountains & presqu'ile creek all night long******* . As soon as day began we withdrew about three miles towards Kiowa Peak mountains & made suitable targets for your riflemen ******* . About Noon® Feb 14th you opened fire upon us from those high hills...our losses were 9 men killed or mortally wounded***** {* Captain Beall *and Lieutenant Colonel Amos Brown resigned their commissions effective February 1st]. At this time Major Stephenson joined us...about 10 o'clock® Feb 14th we retreated again unto Kiowa Peak Mountains(*). We continued here till Tuesday evening when I sent word back aloft that we should move forward again noontime tomorrow morning***** {* Tuesday evening Feb 21st}. That night I repassed these mountains without incident***** {* Wednesday morning March 2nd}. The original bridge was a wooden structure that was destroyed by fire in 1868. A new ironbridge was built in 1876 and it became the first suspension bridge in Pennsylvania.
