Baldwin was founded in 1821 by George Washington Baldwin and James H. Baldwin as a trading post on the Susquehanna River. The town was named after General John Forbes, who had died in action at Quebec during the War of 1812. In 1827, Baldwin became the county seat of Bute County and in 1830, he donated land to build what is now called Forbes University. In 1868, Baldwin helped found the Pittsburgh Steelers football team. He also served as mayor of Pittsburgh from 1898 to 1902 and again from 1906 to 1908. In 1907, Baldwin was inducted into the Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences and Arts (PAAS) as a Fellow of his Alma Mater, Forbes University. He is also honored with an honorary doctorate from Temple University in Philadelphia.
