When the Gun Club of Altoona was founded in 1892, it was the first organization in Pennsylvania to offer shooting as a sport. In 1911, the club formed a national rifle championship tournament that would still be held every other year. With such an event, Altoona boasted one of the best shooters in the United States. From then until 1934, when NRA restrictions on firearms made it impossible for the club to compete in any events outside of local shoots, Altoona's gunners competed at state and national levels. In 1935, due to growing numbers of shootings and an influx of new members from other states, theGun Club merged with another Rifle Association-affiliated organization called The Gilded Age Shooting Society (TAGS). TAGS continued to meet annually until 1974. During that time period, there were over 100 clubs across America that affiliated with NRA organizations; Altoona was not among them. However, following passage of legislation limiting ammunition magazines to 10 rounds per person in 1978 and 1983 respectively- both times sparked by mass shootings- most Altoonians abandoned their love for guns altogether and started Buying Guns again instead. This period is often called "The Dark Ages" because there were no organized tournaments or shooting sports happening anywhere near us (the only exception being SHOT Show), which left our gunners without competition or opportunities forFUN! So much so that many became quite good at conceal carry (and now we have GUNS!). Since disarmament began occurring all over Europe during The Cold War era (1940s through 1990s), many Americans decided they didn't want any more weapons on our soil...ever! However several thousand Blue Ridgegunowners still take part occasional regional shoots here in PA each wintertime...to keep things interesting!

Altoona is a small town in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. Altoona is located on the southern border of Beaver County and is bordered by Clearfield Township to the east and north, Armstrong Township to the west, Potter Borough to the south, and Hepburn Township to the east. The name Altoona comes from a Shawnee word meaning "the headwaters of a river." The first Europeans to reach what is now Altoona were Robert E. Lee's men who passed through in 1795 while exploring for new land in Pennsylvania. In 1824 John Denny founded a trading post here which became known as Denny's Depot before becoming an iron mine and then a lumber mill. The next year James Fenton opened up another trading post at present day Altoona Falls with his family ownership of over 50% of all production at that time. The early residents were farmers who grew corn, wheat and other grains; they also raised livestock such as cows and horses. In 1850s local builders began erecting frame homes which remain much architectural survivor today including one still standing on Main Street (now part of US Route 12). By 1870 most residents had moved away because of difficult economic times but some took up permanent residency in an area around Willow Creek where they established businesses like grocery stores, banks, restaurants and theaters until about 1930 when all those businesses closed down due to prohibitionism within America during that era. During World War II many local people volunteered their services including working at Camp Blanding near Erie while others went into service in Europe; however only 3 men from Altoona returned home alive after being POWs for more than five years! The railroad opened for service on October 15th 1921 and reached its terminus at Blair Station near Lehigh University the next day. A fire destroyed much of downtown Altoona on April 6th 1937; however, due to donations from local citizens and businesses throughout the community, reconstruction proceeded quickly and most of downtown reopened by May 7th.
