The Altoona community has a rich military history. The city was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1797 as a small trading post on the Susquehanna River. In 1814, the United States acquiredranada from Spain and it became an important strategic area in the War of 1812. The city grew rapidly during the 1800s and by 1900 had a population of over 20,000 people. Two wars with Great Britain followed, and in 1902 Altoona was designated the temporary capital of West Virginia during the administration of President Theodore Roosevelt. It was from Altoona that General James A. Garfield delivered his speech at Ford’s Theater in Washington D.C., which helped lead to his election as president on November 4, 1881. During World War I, Altoona played an important role as a munitions plant and military training ground for American soldiers stationed in Europe. After World War II, Altoona emerged as one of the most vibrant cities in Pennsylvania because of its burgeoning college system and growing economy. Today, Altoona is home to numerous businesses and organizations dedicated to its military heritage including local units of the National Guard andArmy Reserve Forces; two hospitals providing care for active duty members;and two annual Military Airshows staged at Wright-Patterson Airport showcasingift air force hardware from all over the world

The Altoona National Guard was organized on November 1, 1861. The unit was activated on December 12, 1861 and the first troops were assigned to duty on January 6, 1862. The Altoona National Guard served in the Union army during the American Civil War from 1861-1865. During their service they participated in many battles including Gettysburg, Vicksburg and Chattanooga.
Altoona is a city in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and the county seat of Altoona County. The population was 54,554 at the 2010 census, making it the seventh-largest city in Pennsylvania and one of its nine counties. The Altoona metropolitan area had a population of 1,782,010 as of 2018. The first settlers to what is now Altoona were farmers who arrived in 1792 from British Columbia. They named their new town after General George Washington's home town on Long Island, New York; however, Washington never visited Altoona. In 1824, John D'Arcy McMahon built a sawmill on White Sands Creek and named it McMahonville after himself and his brothers-in-law who owned the mill site. In 1828, business owners James Tuggle and Robert McCulloch founded the Town Trust Company which would become one of America's first commercial banks. During this time period there was also heavy industry with bleachyards being established on White Sands Creek and nearby valleys; these industries would continue until World War II when they shifted to other sites around Altoona due to military needs such as aluminum production during World War II In 1902, Mayor Edward J. Byrne founded what is now known as The First Methodist Episcopal Church (now First United Methodist) in downtown Altoona to serve the growing community while providing social services like welfare and child support programs that continue today During World War I many businesses closed due to patriotism but within a few years some reopened including Coca Cola which moved into an old steel plant across from town square In 1951 local resident Arlene Dietrich became Miss America for her role in acting in "A Place in the Sun" Dietrich would frequently visit her childhood home outside of Altoona where she entertained friends before moving back into town once again Other notable residents during this time include Congressman James Meckel (1910-1993), comedian Bob Hope (1915-2007), track coach Bill Bynum (b born 1937), neurosurgeon Drs Sol Weiser and brisket cook Roy Oswalt (b 1945). After Mr Meckel's death illness took him he was interred at Elmwood Cemetery just eastof downtown

Altoona, Pennsylvania is a small town located in the state of Pennsylvania, United States. Altoona was founded in 1780 by General George Washington and was the capital of West Virginia until 1801. It became an independent republic in 1791 and remained so until 1861 when it merged with the new state of West Virginia to form the Union State of America. Today, Altoona is a vibrant community with a rich history that has been passed down through its residents and businesses. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Altoona were farmers who came from northeastern England. They moved into present-day Altoona and Clearfield Township during the late 1700s and early 1800s. The area around today's Altoona was originally part of Allegheny County, which was then part of Pennsylvania. In 1781, General George Washington decided to move westward from Philadelphia to take on the Indian threat posed by the Shawnee Indians. He established his headquarters at Fort Mifflin near modern day Altoona for this purpose. In 1792, Congress created a new territory called West Virginia out of parts of Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and Kentucky. The land chosen for West Virginia was not very populous or wealthy enough to be considered as an official state, so Washington designated it as an "auxiliary" state under his jurisdiction instead. This designation allowed him more power over its government than if it had been an actual state within the US Constitution. Washington continued to administer West Virginia as an auxiliary state until 1801 when he resigned as President due to health concerns associated with his growing years. As a result, James Ketchum became president pro tempore (first among equals)of the U S Senate while Washington’s replacement remained unnamed pending confirmation from Congress Hearings could only confirm one man at a time – making Ketchum acting president pro tempore instead of having real authority over Western Virginias affairs like he had expected given his rank & experience! After leaving office, Washington returned home permanently on October 15th 1801 where he died less than two weeks later on October 27th at age 71 years old! This event marks one half century since he set foot on American soil again! Today's Altoona began developing rapidly due in large part to three factors: 1) The opening up of new lands east of Pittsburgh along with Erie County 2) Increased trade between eastern countries & western United States 3) Immigration from European countries
