Altoona is a small city in the United States, located in the Altoona-Johnstown-Scranton, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 9,083 at the 2010 census. Altoona is the only incorporated municipality in Pennsylvania and one of just four cities in the state with a population over 10,000. The City of Altoona was founded on December 20, 1824 by three men from McKees Rocks: James Aitkin, John Doane and Isaac Loyd. James Aitkin donated land for what would become Altoona and John Doane donated money to help finance its construction. Abraham Scranton served as Mayor from 1828 to 1830 and again from 1832 to 1840. In 1845, Samuel Morse established the first telegraph line between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia using his own equipment from McKees Rocks. The town saw some growth during this time with industries such as paper manufacturing becoming dominant early on. However, after World War I hit America hard there were many layoffs throughout much of rural America which caused a decline in economic activity around Altoona throughout the 1920s through 1930s; however that did not stop people from coming to visit or live here during this time period because it had some of the best schools in western Pennsylvania outside of Pittsburgh! During World War II many local businesses closed due to lack of wartime production but townspeople rallied together to support their country both before and after war ended providing goods and services such as cooking oil for military families living near Altoona while also selling gasoline for use by motorists driving through town on routes past Scranton (the townslimits then). Afterward there was an increase in traffic due to increased access to Interstate 15 which crossed through town east-west near current day State College (now Bloomsburg) making it easy for commuters heading east or westbound without having to go through Greencastle or Latrobe Valley first! In recent years there have been several events taking place within walking distance of downtown including: Art Basel - January 21st-25th; State Fair - July 4th; Oktoberfest - October 12th thru 14th; Christmas Tree lighting/ gift giving event at Piazza Park on December 6th & 7th; Independence Day celebration - July 4th
