The Altoona Army National Guard has been a part of the United States armed forces since 1784. The unit was activated on December 14, 1917 as the 555th Infantry Regiment. It initially served in World War I, and fought at the Battle of Belleau Wood and in the trenches of Picardy. After the war, the regiment was redesignated to its current title on September 1, 1921. The 555th Infantry Regiment participated in World War II as part of VIII Corps, commanded by General George C. Marshall. The regiment fought in Normandy, followed by Belgium and Holland before performing occupation duty in Japan after the war ended. In 1951, the 555th Infantry Regiment was re-designated as an armored brigade brigade with headquarters at Altoona garrisoning two armored brigades totaling 100 tanks and artillery pieces. The brigade's mission changed from infantry to armor when it became one of three armor regiments within III Corps under General Norman Schwarzkopf during Operation Desert Storm against Saddam Hussein's Iraq in 1991. The Altoona-based Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to the Revolutionary War. In 1814, the Altoona-based regiment was redesignated the 1st Cavalry Regiment and served in Mexico during that country's civil war. Afterward, it was mobilized for service in Ohio during the American Civil War. The 1st Cavalry Regiment disbanded after the war but its members continued to serve with distinction until World War I when they were again mobilized for service in Ohio.

However recent Census data show that while Italian Americans continue to constitute a sizable percentage of all residents in Altoona today - both men (30%)and women (36%) now feel more connected to their Italian heritage than they do to other nationalities within their community."
