The Allentown National Guard was activated on September 20, 1861 and initially consisted of only men from the town of Allentown. The first unit to be organized was the 1st Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. On December 3, 1861, the 2nd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry was also organized and by February 1862 all three regiments had been raised to a battalion form and were redesignated as the 5th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. On March 15, 1864 Menard’s Act became effective and as a result all volunteer units in Allegheny County were mustered into service with eight days notice. This included the 5th Regiment which continued to exist until it was disbanded in 1865. In 1865 the regiment comissioned officers but remaining enlisted men were discharged at Fort Pitt without any combat experience or pay and returned home. In 1868-1869 there were two major wars crimes committed in Westmoreland County - John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry (John Brown is known for this event) and William Tecumseh Sherman's march through that county (Sherman is famous for this event). As a result of these events the regiment recommissioned on July 12th 1870 with one colonel and 350 rankees however no combat experience or pay was given to these new soldiers. The 5th Regiment again disbanded in 1871 when most of its members reenlisted in other formations or voluntarily left for war abroad. In 1916-1917 there was an attempt by General Order 9/5/16 called "War Measures No 3" which aimed to organize a state militia force within 72 hours should hostilities break out between America and Germany due to World War I preparations underway by both countries; however due to concerns about potential insurrection within state militias this order never went into effect because no such emergency arose during those years In 1924-1925 There Was An Attempt To Organize A Militia Force Called "National Guard" Which Would Serve Prolonged Domestic Purposes By The Executive Office Of The President However This Effort Failed Because National Guardsmen Were Already constituuting And serving In Local Law Enforcement & Military Units

The Allentown National Guard was organized on December 6, 1869. The first soldiers were brought in by the Pennsylvania state legislature to help with the Reconstruction of South Carolina. The first national guard unit was called the 1st Battalion, Allentown Volunteer Infantry. On May 8, 1871, the battalion became the 2nd Battalion and on July 1, 1871, it became 3rd Battalion. In 1895, 4th Battalion and 5th Battalion were added to the National Guard.
