It became an American city on December 14, 1869, when it incorporated as a borough. The current mayor of Allentown is Dan Saterfield. The history of Allentown can be traced back to early German settlers who arrived in North America during the time of the French and Indian War (1763-1766). On August 29, 1751, three men named Johann Georg Weiser, Jakob Kesselring and Friedrich Wilhelm Schneiders picked up stakes and set out from Hannover for what would become known as "the new world". They were hoping to find land that could support them and their families until they could finally settle in British America. After traveling through what is now Pennsylvania and Ohio they reached what is now Allentown on October 5th of that year. The first European settlement in what is now Allentown was made by Jacob Weiser on April 12th of 1752 with his family consisting of fourteen people including four young children. He built a cabin near present day Main Street which still stands today as part of the Weiser Museum Complex. In spite of its name though, this initial location did not offer much opportunity for growth; all it had wereLogansville (now Lebanon), Westmoreland County (now Delaware), Easton Township (now Huntingdon) and Scranton Borough which formed the original borough government under English law but remained independent until March 15th 1868 when they chose to join larger Philadelphia based on common interests such as defense against Native Americans and trade opportunities with Canada In 1814 Isaac Adair erected a log cabin at 15 Market Street which served as both home and office until he burned down following a storm while staying there with his brother Nicholas Adair one year later On November 12th 1816 James Goudreau established himself at Goudreau's Tavern after leaving his farmstead behind because he foundered during the Panic of 1819 He Soon came into conflict with other tavernkeepers over who should get unfair share of profits from alcohol sales due to tight regulations then being put in place by colonial authorities preoccupied with protecting American citizens from potential threats posed by France However despite numerous legal challenges Goudreau ultimately prevailed over his opponents Eventually becoming one of the most successful tavernkeepers in town . In addition to running Goudreau's Tavern he also owned several farms around town including Henry's Mills where he raised cornmeal flour for local merchants before selling it off along with some land around present day Western Avenue between 2nd & 3rd Streets although no evidence remains extant indicating whether or not this actually happened . Finally within less than two years following James Goudreau's establishment all six properties mentioned above had been sold off for an aggregate total price tag totaling $247 including 160 acres located just north east Of Center Street near modern day Penn State University – putting an end toGoudrezaulles business ventures . By 1830 only two remaining businesses still continued operating: John Cohan’s tannery on Second Avenue west thereof since Garrison Hennepin had closed it down about three years earlier followed by George Wellman’s grocery store – both having closed within five years after foundation This detailed account does not do justice to how vibrant and busy downtown Allentown must have been during these early days; instead we will focus solely upon its historical significance due primarily to its role as the birthplaces for many key figures associated with American culture such as Andrew Carnegie, John D'Angelo Lanza, Julius Rosenberg etc… Although many aspects surrounding these times have passed away like Jacob Weiser’s house which stood vacant right next door until 2004 when it was purchased by Heritage Foundation for $2 million dollars thanks largely to pressure brought forth by then Mayor Darrell Clarke – Downtown nonetheless retains quite a bit more character than most municipalities see everyday long gone are those Boomtown days!

The British had no intention of giving up their holdings so they built Fort Pitt along the Susquehanna River in what is now downtown Allentown. In 1768, after losing Battle of Saratoga and being forced to retreat from American territory, General George Washington ordered Major General Henry Knox to take possession of Philadelphia which made Allentown an important crossroads for transportation between New York City and Philadelphia. The first store opened here by Isaac Goodale was established on Market Street in 1801. The town passed through several name changes until it became known as Allentown Township on December 12th, 1836; then again as Bethlehem Township on February 14th, 1849; Mostyn Township on November 15th 1889; Dunmore Borough (now Abington) Borough on May 4th 1914; and finally Ashtabula Borough (now Ebron) Borough effective October 1st 1916 following the merger of Ashtabula with neighboring townships into one borough under that name effective November 6th 1916. During World War I alliantment troops served here including many who later became famous such as Joe Rosenthal who photographed President Franklin D Roosevelt at his inauguration while serving here as a Private First Class with Company C/1/5 (the “Doughboys”). Another famous soldier from this time period was Laurence Eubank Jr., who fought at Cassino before becoming a captain general with the American forces during World War II Later he moved back to his childhood home town where he died at age 86 years old early last year surrounded by family members after battling cancer for many decades
