Allentown, Pennsylvania is a small town in the Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Lehigh County after Bethlehem. The first coffeehouses were opened in Allentown by Italian immigrants who were looking for a place to buy and sell their beans. In 1824, Swiss immigrant Johann Gottlieb Fischer sent his young son to start a coffee shop at Ninth and Market Streets. Fischer's Coffee House became one of the most popular places for coffee lovers in Allentown and would remain so until 1954 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1887, two brothers - George Muhlenberg and John Stratton - started Stratton Bros., which would become one of the leading coffee houses in Philadelphia. They imported whole bean coffees from Europe and roasted them on their own property near Lambertville, New Jersey before selling them wholesale to local merchants and churches. In 1912, they founded Stratton Coffee Roasters Incorporated as a partnership with their brother-in-law James Biddle (Jazz) Weingarten (the owner of Bethlehem's famous Kelley's Bakery). In 1955, George Muhlenberg passed away and his sons John Muhlenberg Jr., Barry Muhlenberg (Barry Sr.), Dennis Kappeler (Dennis), David Engelbrecht (David),and Bob Smith took over management of Stratton Bros.. The business expanded rapidly under these ownership changes until 1978 when it merged with Philadelphia Coffee Company Limited to form Starbuck Coffee Corporation . After purchasing its parent company's assets from Starbucks Corporation , Starbuck Coffee Corporation continued to operate independently as an artisanal roaster until 2000 when it merged with Peet’s Coffee & Tea Company . Finally, on October 15th, 2000 Starbuck Coffee Corporation merged into Peet’s Dutch American tea company . This made Allentown the only city in Pennsylvania where both Peet’s Dutch American tea company AND Starbucks corporation operated simultaneously within one city limits!

In 1916, they opened a retail store on Main Street in Allentown. The McDonnell brothers remain Chairman and CEO of the company to this day. In 1933, the Allentown Coffee Company merged with rival Philadelphia Coffee Company to form the Phillippines-Allentown Coffee Corporation. The merger allowed the Allentown Coffee Company to expand into new markets throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware. In 1967, the company merged with American Friends of Cinema (AFC) to become AFC-Allentown Coffee Corporation. This merger helped increase marketing reach for AFC-Allentown coffee products statewide as well as create a single source for all theatergoing caffeine needs across Pennsylvania.

This paper will explore the coffee history of several artisanal coffee roasters in the United States. The first Section will provide a general overview of artisanal coffee, and the second Section will focus on two specific roasters- Caffeine & Donuts in Portland OR and Four Barrel Coffee in Fort Worth TX. Each of these roasters have had a significant impact on American coffee culture, both historically and currently. The first espresso was made by Giovanni de Luigi at his workshop near Florence, Italy in 1492. Coffee was then importated to Europe from Africa where it was ground into small pieces for brewing tea. Roasting began in Spain with Sancho Panza (c1600-1500) who roasted whole beans before exporting them to Portugal where they were consumed as sweet beverages such as wine and brandy. Portuguese traders also brought Italian cuisine to America which influenced the baking techniques used at New Amsterdam (1624- 1664), Philadelphia (1681- 1755), Boston (1726- 1775), and Charleston (1786-1860). In 1812 John Jacob Astor founded The New York Times Company which became one of the largest newspaper publishers in North America. Under his leadership, many new technologies were developed including electricity which allowed him to power his presses himself; this led to increased newspaper production costs which he offset by selling advertising space on his papers. In 1865 George Jones began importing Lebanese coffee from Beirut; under their guidance, Arabica beans became popular among American brewers because they were high quality and more susceptible to fermentation than Robusta beans. In 1893 Alfred Peet introduced Java Coffee into America while staying at an hotel in Paris; this led to increased demand for Indonesian coffees throughout much of America beginning around 1900. By 1915 Dutch Style Coffee had become popularized throughout much of North America due largely to advances by Dutch immigrants such as Jock Hendrik van der Linden whose familyowned bakery in Harlem NY produced world renown Dutch Style Coffees until its closure during World War II During World War II many Americans turned their back on roastable whole bean coffees instead using instant packets or capsules which caused substantial loss for some large multinational conglomerates who exported entire bean coffees all over the world during that time period(Moffatt 1994). However, there is evidence that smaller artisanal roasterings continue today within traditional methods like direct roast followed by Bonappetto shipping method Aspects of this history are instructive for how we might approach our own cup choices today: Not only should we beaware of iconic names like Starbucks®, Dunkin’ Donuts®, etc., but also lesser known but equally delicious brews from regions like Ethiopia or Guatemala that may not be well known outside their own communities or travel destinations
