In 1800, John Fenton established a gristmill on Big Creek which served as both a mill and source of water for nearby settlements such as Pennsbury and Huntingdon Township. By 1900, there were over 20 mills in Butler County with Aliquippa being one of them! In 1907, Mr. & Mrs. Jerald Siegel purchased 640 acres northeast of present day AlquIPPA from Fred Cramer for $10 per acre ($140 million at 2008 prices). This put AlquIPPA within easy reach of much needed new housing development – something that didn't happen until after World War II when bulldozers began tearing down century-old buildings to make way for modern homes! The city's growth accelerated rapidly following World War II with successive waves of immigrants coming to work in local factories or start their own businesses: Italians (1948), Poles (1950), Koreans (1956), Chinese (1970), Japanese (1984), Hispanics (1992) etceteras until today’s definitively multicultural community!
