The Marines have been deployed in many places throughout the world and they have left their mark on many cultures. One of the most famous Marine detachments is the Woodburn detachment which was stationed in Oregon from 1941 to 1945. The Marines who served here were some of the most decorated soldiers of World War II. They are known for their courage, strength, and determination. The detachment was also one of the first units to deploy during Operation Overlord, which led to World War II’s biggest victory. After World War II, the Marines decided that they wanted to stay in Oregon. This is where they founded Camp Pendleton and started training new troops. In 1951, they moved into what is now called Marine Barracks #2 on land that had once been part of Fort Vancouver Indian Reserve. Here, they trained young marines until 1973 when they pulled out all together and moved back to Japan for a year before coming home again. After that deployment, it was decided that California would be better suited for them because of its climate and resources. So Camp Pendleton was closed down in 1976 and replaced by Camp Pendleton Naval Base which still stands today as a memorial to those marines who served here during World War II and afterwards

The Marine CorpsDeployedGiftHistory in Woodburn, Oregon began on December 14, 1944 with the deployment of the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines. The battalion arrived at Naval Station San Diego and was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 2d. The battalion operated from USS Midway (CV-3) during World War II.
Woodburn is a small town in Oregon, United States. The population was 1,536 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Willamette River and is part of the Salem–Keizer–Bellingham region. The town was founded in 1892 by settlers from Illinois. It was named for General George Woodburn, an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and during the Indian Wars. The first store in Woodburn opened in 1898. The town got its name from General George Washington's burned down quarters near present day downtown Woodburn. In 1903, the US Post Office moved to what is now Main Street from a location south of town on Forest Road 2A (now Interstate 5). In 1907, First National Bank became one of two banks in town. In 1914, a new high school was built; it remains Woodburn High School today. In 1922, an aluminum smelting plant was established by Englishman Harry Wattson at what is now Industrial Park East outside of town limits; it operated until 1972. The mill closed down around 1977 but many remnants remain including a water tower and some brick buildings still standing today as part of Milltown State Recreation Area which lies just east of town limits on Umatilla Lake

Woodburn, Oregon was founded in 1871 by the Willamette Valley Company. It became a town in 1903 and an agricultural center in 1907. In 1916, it became a port of call for World War I veterans coming to the Oregon coast. The town experienced some growth during World War II as war production increased around the country. However, Woodburn slowly lost its economic importance after the war. The population dropped from about 10,000 in 1951 to 4,500 in 1990. At that point, it reverted back to a small rural community with no major industry or businesses. However, over the last few decades, there has been a growing movement to revive interest in Woodburn and create new opportunities for its citizens. One recent effort has been the establishment of the Woodburn Historical Museum which is open every day since September 1st and offers educational programs on local history and life ats time of prohibition era (1912-1920).
The town of Woodburn was founded on the Oregon Trail in 1847 by a group of Mormon pioneers. The town became an important stop on the Oregon Trail because it was located close to the route and had good water resources. The town grew quickly, and in 1852, it incorporated as a city. Woodburn played an important role in the Civil War because it was located near battlefields where Union forces fought against Confederate troops.
