Woodburn is a town in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the Deschutes River. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bend-Mendocino County, Oregon Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Woodburn were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game near the river's edge. In 1847, Jedediah Smith and his party explored the area and named it for John Woodburn (1773–1845), an American fur trader and explorer who had traveled through this region in 1799. The town site was platted in 1855 by Alfred Hitchcock after he found a grant to do so from United States president James K. Polk Jr.. In 1877, David Sanger built a sawmill south of town on the Deschutes River. This helped start what would become one of Portland's largest industrial neighborhoods, with mills manufacturing everything from flour to automobiles and radios. By 1907, Woodburn had about 200 residents, most of whom worked at Sanger's mill or elsewhere in nearby towns such as Gresham and Hillsboro. However, when World War I began in 1914, all industry stopped until 1919 when lumber production resumed thanks to increased demand from war producers such as Boeing; Woodburn actually went out of business during that time due to competition from other logging communities across central Oregon. However, things changed after World War II when petroleum became available along Interstate 5; truckers started bringing logs downriver for processing into wood products such as plywood and particleboard; Woodburn started booming again as businesses came back online like restaurants serving local cuisine and small shops selling gardening tools and home improvement items like nails and screws; even old mill buildings have been used lately as storage sheds for various businesses downtown which have cropped up around where they once sat unused!
