The first military installation in Woodburn was Fort Hall, which was built in 1867. In 1896, the United States Military Academy was established at Fort Douglas in nearby Bellevue. The academy eventually became the United States Military Academy West, which is now known as USMA-West Seattle. In 1917, the First Infantry Division of the American army was headquartered in Woodburn. After World War II ended, the division disbanded and its members were reorganized into other divisions and brigades. In 1951, USMA-West Seattle became USMA-Woodburn when it merged with USMA-Bellevue to form one school campus under one name. Today, USMA-Woodburn continues to be a powerhouse educational institution for both students and service members alike. With an enrollment of over 12,000 students from across the nation, it is one of America's largest military academies and provides unique opportunities for student innovation and exploration as well as professional development for cadets and officers alike.
Woodburn is a small town in Oregon, located in the Wallowa National Forest. The population was 597 at the 2000 census. It is part of theRogue Valley region. The first people to live here were the Hidatsa and Umatilla Native Americans. They hunted and gathered plants and animals in what is now Woodburn. The first built a teepee on the edge of a hill, and soon others followed suit. In 1828, Wm. Caldwell built what is now known as Caldwell's Grove Methodist Episcopal Church in Woodburn. In 1892, James Gifford platted this area as part of his land grant to the United States for Rancho San Juan de los Osos which included present day Woodburn and parts of present day Hanford and Bullock counties. The town was named after him because he donated land to build a school hereabouts in 1892-93). In 1923, Averell Harriman donated land to form part of Pacific Highway 90 which runs through Woodburn today (the old road alignment can still be seen close by on US-2). This highway later became known as I-5 when it was created from scratch in 1966 out of two separate plans that had been developed concurrently - one called "The Project" which aimed to improve Motor City Boulevard between Eugene and Salem; the other called " nudie theory ", which proposed widening I-5 from just east downtown Portland all the way south along Beaver Street past Hillsboro into Salem before terminating at I-5 near there)
