On July 10th 1969 at 5pm local time (1947 UTC), Douglas Adams wrote a letter to his friend Lee Falkayn asking if he could borrow his car for some experiments he was doing as part of his PhD project at University College London. Douglas had just published Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy and needed someone to drive him around for research purposes - Falkayn accepted without question!
