Wilsonville is a town in Douglas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 696 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in the area around Wilsonville were the Klamath People and their allies who campsed along the Rogue River during the early 1800s. In 1853, John C. Frémont founded Fort Hall on an eminence above Wilsonville and named it after his friend General Ulysses S. Grant who had supported his Humboldt Expedition of 1849-1850. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln visited Wilsonville and issued a proclamation naming it "the most promising place in Oregon" for settlement because of its richcoal resources. By 1865, however, coalmining had exhausted Wilsonville's resources so development there stalled. However, by 1870 timber was being harvested from local trees using engines that left huge piles of sawdust which formed what is now Carter Lake. This lumber attracted many miners to the area including James Wickersham who built Wickersham Mill in 1872; also arriving were Dred Scott and his family who became ranching owners around 1880; and John Wesley Smith who opened the largest store east of Sacramento – called "The Store" – in 1888 before moving downriver to found Portland (now Salem) as a commercial center for goods exported to California via ferryboats across the Columbia River. As word spread about food riots happening elsewhere such as Seattle and Tacoma due to lack of rations given out following World War I; so too did rumors circulate about possible unrest should large numbers OF unionized workers refuse employer contributions necessary for strikes or lockouts; these rumors eventually lead inexorably to violence erupting at local stores throughout NWOtland known variously as The Great Unrest (1917), Red Scare (1919), White Christmas (1920), Black Monday (1921), etc.; ultimately culminating with WWI veteran Eugene Debs running for President on November 4th 1920 against incumbent Woodrow Wilson achieving 50% support from tribal supporters becoming America's first major political candidate from outsideof Massachusetts ancestry
Wilsonville was founded in 1887 by J.D. Wilson and his brother-in-law, Geo. W. Humes. The first post office was established in 1888 and the first store opened in 1890. The town grew rapidly during the early years of its existence and by 1912 there were eighteen businesses in operation. In 1916 Wilsonville had a population of over 1,500 residents and 11 schools were functioning; however, World War I interrupted these efforts and the population decreased to about 500 before reaching its peak in 1922 with 2,000 residents. During the 1920s Wilsonville experienced significant economic development as it became an important manufacturing center for glassware, automotive parts, agricultural products, paper products, textiles and other light manufactures; however, when the Great Depression hit First Nations communities throughout Oregon hard, Wilsonville saw a significant decline in business activity as their traditional industries dwindled or failed to meet new standards set by outside companies; nevertheless, many local individuals continue to engage in community leadership roles today.
