Tactical coffee is a term used to describe the brewing of coffee in an area where military operations are taking place. Coffee was brewed on battlefields and other wartime sites for troops and commanders who needed a caffeine break from the bloodshed. The first known reference to tactical coffee comes from General George Washington’s diary, which mentions drinking hot coffee during his march through New York City in 1776. The earliest references to espresso came from Italy, where it was called “espresso” or “bottega d’espresso.” In 1829, Italian inventor Giovanni Battista Perotto developed the first true espresso machine, and this led to the development of café au lait and cappuccino. By World War II, cafés were serving military forces with both caffeinated and decaffeinated drinks as well as pastries such as donuts and croissants. During World War II, coffee became one of the many commodities rationed by the United States government. In 1908, John T. Cody founded the first coffee cooperative in West Linn, Oregon. The first production of beans and coffee was made at the Cooperative on Speedway Boulevard. By 1913, the company had moved to its present location on Sandy Boulevard and began making a variety of products including iced tea, hot chocolate, espresso drinks and other items. In 1919, the company became a national franchise with headquarters in New York City. In 1970, they merged with another coffee cooperative to form Bick & Company Coffee Corporation.
West Linn, Oregon (population: 78,000) is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was estimated to be 101,859 as of the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Multnomah County and home to two universities - Oregon State University and Clark College. The area around West Linn became known for its fertile farming land near the Willamette River. In 1847, George Vancouver explored the region and named it "Oregon" after his discovery of the Columbia River in British Columbia. The first permanent settler in what would become West Linn was John McLoughlin in 1851. He built a log cabin on East Mill Creek and named it "West Linn." The first post office was established at West Linn on February 15, 1855. In 1862, settlers found gold near present-day Salem while exploring southeast Oregon; this led to an influx of miners into the area. By 1865, most of what would become Multnomah County had been acquired by Portland because of efforts by Governor Salmon Pelly to consolidate local government under one authority. In 1865–1867, Portland laid out streets and developed plans for what is now downtown Portland with help from James Wickersham Richardson Sr., a Scottish immigrant who had come to America as a miner. Richardsons donated land for much of downtown Portland and supervised construction of some ofPortland's earliest buildings including City Hall and First National Bank Building – all part of today's Pioneer Square neighborhood. In 1893–1894 Lewis Mooty built Wagon Wheel Dam across Willamette River at what is now Beaverton; this created Lake Oswego which made westside Portland much more accessible with easier access to water resources than before. This development also helped spur industrial growth in west Multnomah County including businesses such as Jardine Rubber Company Limited later renamed Abbott Laboratories Incorporated (ABT), aluminum smelters Valley Forge Aluminum Works Company Limited (Valley Forge), Cascade Glass Corporation (Cascade Glass), Dodge & Drake Coal Mine begun production at Beavers Bend Mines on Wilson Road northeast of Beaverton on October 25th 1888 In 1906 during World War I , General Douglas MacArthur headquartered his forces between Troutdale Junction eastward along Interstate 5 then north along Umpqua River past Astoria then northwest downriver past Eugene before continuing south along Clearwater Creek through Diamond Head Tunnel onto Highway 97 about 20 miles from Woodland Park

In 1847, the United States acquired Oregon from Great Britain. The territory was mostly rural and sparsely populated, with few natural resources. In the following years, U.S. officials struggled to find a way to make use of the land and populate it with settlers. In 1851, President James K. Polk appointed Lewis Cass as the first governor of Oregon Territory. Cass made a series of decisions that helped spur development in western Oregon. He proposed building a road through the area, and he invested in irrigation systems and other infrastructure projects. Cass also attracted American settlers to Oregon Territory by creating a system of government that was more decentralized than what was found in California or Texas. This arrangement allowed for greater business opportunities and investment in the region without fear of federal intervention or regulation. By 1865, however, conditions had begun to improve in Oregon Territory as well as throughout America due to increasing population growth and technological advances. In this period, many Americans began searching for new opportunities abroad instead of remaining behind at home during an economic recession. Stated one historian: “The West was beckoning” (Moses 1993). Faced with this opportunity, President Andrew Johnson sent two commissioners to explore the possibility of purchasing Oregon Territory from its residents in 1868-69; these men recommended that Congress purchase the land instead because it would be easier to administer than if it were sold directly to individuals (Dixon 1992). Congress approved this recommendation on February 23rd, 1870 (Dixon 1992). The purchase price was $3 million dollars ($100 million today) (Johnson 1970). Oregon quickly became one of America’s most successful westward expansion efforts – thanks largely to its aggressive leadership by Governor Cass and president Andrew Johnson’s desire for a quick solution to problems overseas rather than permit any further delay (Foster 1988). By 1888, over ninety percent of all pioneers who had arrived in eastern Washington state had moved west into Oregon; within fifteen years all Native Americans living eastofthe Cascades were removed from their traditional lands entirely (Goudreau 1984). Expansion into present-day Idaho followed shortly thereafter (Kingston 1990). Today much of what is known about early western history comes from journals written by pioneers themselves!
