West Linn is a town in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem-Keizer-Bend, OR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of West Linn goes back to 1878 when John and Anna Wohlgemuth established a ranch on land that would become West Linn. In 1902, they donated their entire ranch to the city of Portland for development into an urban area. In 1922, when Portland annexed Clackamas County, West Linn became part of the new county. The city prospered due to its location onthe main east-west highway through Oregon and its close relationship with Portland; by 1930 it had acquired over 30 acres (12 ha) in what is now downtownPortland. Portland's annexation of Clackamas County left much undeveloped land north of downtownClackamas Falls which was put up for sale in 1935 by local landowners who hoped to bring development to their property but no one took advantage because there were no plans for such a large metropolitan area south of I-5 within commuting distance from major cities like Seattle and Los Angeles; this lacklustre display may have been due in part to fears that such an annexation would result in competition from developers who would want access to all the same resources as Portland Municipality – something that never happened. In 1854, the Oregon Territory was organized. The area that would become West Linn was part of the Columbia River District. On July 4, 1855, the first post office in the town was established with a population of six people. By 1860, there were twelve businesses in town and three stores. In 1870, an oil well was drilled in what is now downtown West Linn and a pipeline was built to transport oil from the well to be sold commercially. The town grew rapidly and by 1880 had over ninety residents.
