In 1886, lumber magnate Augustus Folsom donated land to the town for a water supply system and mills. The town's growth accelerated during World War I when many men from Portland arrived to work on military technology projects. AfterWWI ended, West Linn became an agricultural center with large cotton plantations and livestock farms until it lost its importance after phosphate reserves were developed nearPortland in the early 1960s. However, some people continue to live there today because of its unique historical culture and architecture dating back to pioneer times
West Linn was founded in 1847 by John Evans and his wife, Eliza. The town started as a small trading post on the banks of the Willamette River. In 1852, West Linn became the county seat of Clackamas County. By 1880, West Linn had a population of 565 people.
