In 1795, an Italian named Giovanni Boccace discovered roasted coffee beans while exploring the Oregon Coast. He brought these beans back to Italy and put them on sale at his grocery store in Rome. This started the European coffee trade and helped make Italy one of the leading countries in terms of coffee production. In 1876, Englishman John Thornton bought some land near Tualatin, Oregon and began growing coffee. He named his farm The Thornton Estate after himself and his wife's parents. In 1898, Alfred Peet purchased this same land from Thornton and began growing high-quality Arabica beans there too. These two men were responsible for creating what is now known as Pacific Northwest Coffee Company (PNC). Today, PNC is one of America's most successful coffee companies with operations throughout North America and Europe. They have nearly 50 years of experience in producing quality coffees that are enjoyed by customers around the world. In 1885, when the American Pacific Railroad was completed from San Francisco to Portland, Oregon, the town of Tualatin was founded on the site of present-day Tualatin. The railroad company built a depot in what is now downtown Tualatin and began to build nearby hotels. In 1895, the company donated land for a university and erected a first building on campus. In 1912, the university moved from its original location in downtownTualatin to its current site on State Street. The University of Oregon became an autonomous public institution in 1916 and established its own chancellor, which included chairing a faculty committee that recommended creating an undergraduate college at the university. On December 12, 1916, groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the new undergraduate college and it opened its doors to students in 1917. The college quickly became one of Oregon's leading educational institutions with strong programs in arts and humanities as well as business and science; however, World War II interrupted many of these activities. In 1948, after Japanese Americans had been interned during World War II under Executive Order 9066 (the so-called " exclusion order"), UIUC transferred all but two degrees earned by Japanese Americans living on campus intoUIUC's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLA). In 1969 UIUC severed relations with UCLA after that school adopted a more restrictive admissions policy toward Asian Americans than UIUC did. After years of protests by UIUC students and faculty against this decision, UCLA agreed to become an affiliate member of UC Berkeley pursuant to a Memorandum Agreement between UC President Richard Nixon and UC Regents Chancellor George Washington Carver Sr.; however UC Berkeley never allowed any non-Californian students onto its campus. The intense fundraising efforts undertaken by UIUC alumni led to construction of three main buildings: Memorial Stadium (now home toOregon State University), Hearst Hall (now home to Pacific Lutheran University)and Tilghman Hall (now home toPortland State University). These structures served as administrative offices until they were replaced by new facilities in 2001–2002 when UO developed plans for what would eventually become called multipurpose Saunders Center: A facility that could house various student services including health care; classrooms; office space; research laboratories; a theater/villa overlooking Pioneer Courthouse Square; open space for community events; as well as housing for about 1,000 graduate students who study at UO’s School Of Education or Law School or other faculties within UO’s six colleges plus two professional schools affiliated with it. The first European to visit Tualatin was Capt. John Maynard in 1792. He and his party of three men explored the vicinity and made a landing on the present site of Tualatin on July 3, 1792. The town was founded in 1839 by Captain George Gibbs and his wife, Ann. The first post office was established in 1841. In 1862, the Oregon Railroad Company built a line from Portland to Eugene, which passed through Tualatin. By 1870, there were over 100 residents in Tualatinsville area. A school was built in 1886 and is still used today as the primary school for Tualatin Village School District #2. In 1909, it became a city with its own government under Mayor Charles Wickershams. On December 15th of that year, Mayor Wickershams designated the main business district around what is now downtown as the city limits effective January 1st next year making it an official part of the city of Portland proper instead of just being annexed intoPortland as it had been prior to that date!
