Troutdale, Oregon is a small town located in the Columbia River Gorge region of northwestern Washington. The population was 7,883 at the 2010 census. Troutdale's coffee history dates back to when it was first settled by Europeans in the early 1800s. The first documented cup of coffee made in Troutdale was found on November 20, 1875, by three men who were travelling through the area on their way to Yakima Valley. The first recorded purchase of land for coffee production in Troutdale occurred on December 1, 1907. At that time, farmers from Snohomish County and Clallam County jointly established a cooperative enterprise called the Pacific Northwest Coffee Company Ltd. The company grew rapidly and bought additional land throughout its years of operation. By 1912, it had acquired over 100 acres of property within what is now Troutdale. In 1917, the company merged with two other co-operatives - the Cascade Coffee Company Ltd., also based in Troutdale, and the Snoqualmie Coffee Company Ltd.. These new organizations became known as THE TROUTDALE COMPANY (later renamed THE PCC). In 1927THE TROUTDALE COMPANY bought an entire block of land between North Main Street and South Main Street from Jenssen Tobacco & Grain Corporation for $1 million dollars! This purchase marked a turning point for the company as it became one ofthe largest single contributors to local economic development during its early years. In 1932THE TROUTDALE COMPANY produced its very first cup of coffee! That same yearTHE TROUTDALE COMPANY purchased an old mill site located near present day Highway 97 south of town and began brewing its famous beans there until 1974 when they moved their operations to their current location adjacent to US Forest Service Headquarters building which provides them with all modern equipment including air conditioning and refrigeration!
