Since the early 1800s, Tigard, Oregon has been a military town. The first organized military unit in the area was the Oregon Volunteers in 1851. In 1865, the Portland Barracks were built and used by the Oregon Militia until 1869 when they were replaced by Fort George Wright on Washington Boulevard. In 1881, Fort Wright was turned into a cavalry barracks and served as such until 1893 when it became an Army depot. The Depot also served as headquarters for various units of the Army during World War I and World War II. In 1953, Tigard became home to Joint Base Lewis-McChord and home to Headquarters USAF Pacific Air Forces (HUAF). On 1 October 1957, HUAF moved from Lewis-McChord to RAF Lakenheath in England where it remains today. over time many different types of military installations have been located in Tigard including: USMC Camp Pendleton (1958), RAF Lakenheath (1957-1986), USArmy Ft Hood (1998-present), Danish Defense Force HQ (2008-present) and Naval Station Newport News - which is now part of United States Navy Pier - all of which are still active today. Today, Tigard is one of America's most militarized cities with multiple military facilities scattered throughout its neighborhoods and businesses. However, during the 1930s–1940s Tigard experienced successive rounds of decline as it became overwhelmed by factors such as growing automobiles and suburban development around it. In 1990 Tigard Mayor Donny Chin announced plans to make the community more bicycle-friendly through an effort known as "The Bikeway Project". This began a trend of revitalization that has continued tothis day
