Tigard, Oregon is a small town located in the Siskiyou Mountains of Oregon. The population was 1,614 at the 2000 census. Tigard was founded in 1887 by Hiram Burnett and his family. Burnett was a settler who traveled to California and saw the gold fields there. He decided to move his family to Oregon, and they set up shop in what is now known as Burnetttown. The town thrived until the early 1900s when timber prices went up and farming became more popular. In 1907, Tigard had a school but no public library. A group of local farmers pooled their money to create the Tigard Public Library in 1911. The library has been open since then and currently serves the community with over 30 shelves of books and an extensive collection of papers from the town's history. The first settlers were rough characters who were not content living off hunting and fishing supplies that they collected from surrounding forests.
