During the 1930s and 1940s, Tigard’s agricultural economy transitioned from horticulture to manufacturing due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Willamette River. During this time, Tigard’s coffee industry experienced rapid growth due to its growing population and access to cheap labor. At one point during this time period, Tigard had more than 100 businesses employing more than 1,000 people! The current coffee industry in Tigard is based on two main types of beans: Colombian and Ethiopian Abyssinian prestige coffees. These varieties are predominately grown in South America but also made available through specialty stores throughout North America. In the early 1800s, coffee was being grown in what is now Nigeria. The first coffee plantations were established there and soon afterward, other places in Africa as well. The first European to experience the benefits of coffee was Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan who discovered New World in 1519. He brought back beans to Spain where they were roasted and then consumed by Spanish sailors or used as currency. The discovery of new mental health cures such as caffeine may also have had something to do with why Brazil became so important after that country discovered Java in 1499. Coffee began getting popular throughout Europe during the Napoleonic Wars which led to an increase in demand for bean products across the continent. However, it wasn’t until 1814 when French warlord Napoleon Bonaparte founded his own espresso house and began selling coffee branded with his name only at great expense to others. This allowed him a monopoly on the industry which he eventually lost due to competition from Dutch brewers who could produce better-quality beans on a smaller scale at a fraction of the cost. Throughout this period, different roasters tried their hand at producing high-quality coffees for export but only two companies managed to achieve mainstream success: Keurig (now part of Abbott Laboratories) and Swiss manufacturer Caffè Italiano both introduced ground whole bean brewing into North America in 1912 (the precursor to modern drip coffee). The first coffee was roasted in a cave by Peres and his mentor, Nicholas-Jacques Conte. Roasted beans were hand-selected and stored in a cellar near the town of Gaudi. The first espresso machine was built by Angelo Brega in 1784. Coffee became popularized after traveling to Italy to taste it for the first time. Coffee houses started popping up all over Europe, and America soon followed suit.
Oregon was born in 1853, when a group of people led by George C. Smith journeyed from the east coast of North America overland to what is now Oregon. They named their new land Columbia County after the ancient colony of Columbia in South Africa. The first permanent white settlers arrived in 1855, and by 1860 Tigard had become the largest town in the area. Tigard's growth as a commercial center continued until the early 1900s, during which time it became known for its lumber industry and its large number of agricultural products. After World War II, however, Tigard experienced significant decline as a manufacturing center due to competition from nearby Portland and other metropolitan areas. However, since the late 1990s there has been an effort to revive the town's economy with initiatives such as downtown redevelopment and new housing developments.
In 1821, the area that is now Tigard was part of what was called "The Oregon Country." The United States acquired this land from Great Britain in 1846 and began to develop it as a territory. In 1850, Congress created the state of Oregon and gave it to Utah Territory. This left Tigard with the responsibility for governing itself. In 1886, the city of Portland was founded on the east side of Tigard. The city grew rapidly and by 1912 had become one of the largest in America. It became an important transportation center and developed into a major entertainment district. In 1962, Portland changed its name to Seattle after becoming an independent city.
