The modern army was born in 1815 when the United States Congress authorized a military organization, the Infantry Regiment of Oregon. The first units were raised in eastern Oregon and western Washington and sent to the Mexican-American War. In 1846, after the Compromise of 1850, the Army was divided into three services: infantry (U.S.), artillery (Mexico), and cavalry (Canada). The U.S. Infantry Regiment of Oregon became the 1st Infantry Division in 1862, while Canada's 1st Cavalry Brigade formed part of General Sir John A. Macdonald's Canadian Expeditionary Force that invaded North America in 1864. In World War I, American soldiers fought on both sides from April 1917 until November 1918 as part of Allied forces fighting against Germany and Austria-Hungary. In total, more than 50,000 Americans died in service; however, only about 2 percent of all combat losses during World War I were attributed to American soldiers. During World War II, American troops served in Europe and Asia as part of both Allies and Axis forces fighting against Nazi Germany and Japan respectively. More than 200,000 Americans died duringWWII; however approximately one third or more were due to combat injuries sustained while serving with the military or by accidents such as those caused by unexploded ordnance or enemy fire.

In 1887, the US Army established a garrison at Fort Dalles in Oregon. The fort was built on the site of an earlier Indian post and served as a training ground for the military until 1898. In 1892, the fort was renamed Fort Stevens after General George Custer, who died in battle near it. In 1907, Fort Stevens became part of the newly formed United States Military Academy at West Point. The academy moved to its current location in New York City in 1921 and changed its name to American University in 1969.

But Portland never gave up its independent spirit; even when it faced obstacles, like a fire that destroyed much of downtown in 1886, it continued To thrive until recent times thanks largely to its vibrant cultural scene (including several major art museums) and strong community spirit
