The Marines of St. Helens, Oregon have long been a part of the community and pride of their town. The town of St. Helens, Oregon stands on the banks of the Columbia River and is located in eastern Oregon. It was founded in 1853 by Mormon settlers who had journeyed from Nauvoo, Illinois. The mining boom that followed the discovery of new gold fields in 1859 led to a population growth that outpaced that of St. Helens itself. By 1880, the community had grown so large that it needed to be annexed by Portland, Oregon. Today, St. Helens remains a small town with a population of around 1,500 people and an economy based primarily on agriculture and tourism. The first European settlement in what is now Oregon was made by Spanish explorers in 1791 when they explored the region for mineral resources. In 1821, British exploratory traders discovered coal near present-day Stinson Beach and began trading with the Mexican government for goods such as lumber and hides. This early exploration led to speculation among entrepreneurs that rich deposits of coal were waiting to be developed in what is now east central Oregon including parts of Salem andPortland. In 1853, two Mormon settlers named Elisha Kirtland and Reuben Rock elected to move from Nauvoo into present daySt. Helens after discovering land east of their city on the Missouri River which had been given away as part of President James Kirtland's purchase from Mexico City in 1844 following his tenure as president under Joseph Smith's Moroni business venture during Latter Day Saint restoration process (1839-1845). The Mormons abandoned their holdings here soon after arriving but left behind a lasting legacy as one of America's earliest gold rush towns with its own utopian society known as Brigham Young University (BYU)
The Marine Corps is one of the most decorated branches of the United States military. The Marines have a rich history that ranges from their role in World War II to present day operations. One of the most famous Marines is World War II veteran, General James Mattis, who currently serves as the Secretary of Defense. In 1936, four Marines were selected to serve as part of America's first Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF). The MEF fought in both world wars and was disbanded in 1949. In 1955, the U.S. Congress created a special unit called the Marine Rifle Battalion (MRB). It was organized into Companies and later Battalions throughout American involvement in Indochina and Vietnam. After more than 50 years of service, the MRB was decommissioned on October 4th, 2016. However, it still has a legacy within the Marine Corps and its members are still commemorated through detachments that are stationed around the world today. On November 15th, 2018, three companies from Camp Pendleton California will participate in an event called "Marine For All" which will provide opportunities for all Americans to get involved with marine corps at local level across all 27 states represented by our branch

After the war, St. Helens grew rapidly as a result of its connections to the military and business community. In the 1970s, however, economic development slowed in St. Helens as a result of population growth in other parts of Oregon and Washington. In recent years, however, local businesses have regained their footing and are growing again in St. Helens.
The community of St. Helens, Oregon, was founded in 1847 by the brothers John and Peter McLaughlin. The town began as a farming community and soon became an important shipping point on the Willamette River. The town was destroyed by a fire in 1902, but was rebuilt and renamed St. Helens in 1909 after the death of its founder. The population of the town peaked at around 10,000 in 1930, but declined thereafter because of commuting distance to larger cities. In 1995, the town voted to become an unincorporated area within Clackamas County.
