The first coffee beans were roasted in St. Helens, Oregon in 1887 by Nicholas Latimer. The region was then known as the Cascades and had a humid climate with a high degree of growth. The Klamath Mountains were to the north and the Willamette River was to the east. Coffee production began on small farms and continued until 1938 when large-scale coffee production began in St. Helens and nearby Butte City. By 1943, coffee production totaled more than 2 million pounds per year. During World War II, coffee beans were rationed and did not reach market levels until after 1945 when demand increased because of the war effort. In 1957, two new processing plants were built near St. Helens which increased yields by 20%. In 1974, another new plant was added which doubled productivity for Espresso America Incorporated (EspressoAmerica). Today, artisan coffee is still produced in small towns throughout Oregon and Washington state using traditional methods such as hand roasting, direct marketing, fermentation/fermentation bottling and packaging techniques unique to each farmer or location. These farms continue to produce high quality coffees that are enjoyed by consumers all over the world!

In the early 1800s, a man named John Doane started roasting coffee in a small shop on Southeast 12th Street in St. Helens, Oregon. Over time, Doane's coffee became well-known and respected throughout the Northwest. In the 1920s, another man named Harry Olsen opened his own cafe near the same location and continued to roast coffee until he passed away in 1951. The business continued under new ownership until it was acquired by Starbucks in 1997.
The history of St. Helens, Oregon is as varied and complex as the people who live there. The town was founded in 1847 by fur traders from Vancouver, British Columbia, and quickly grew into a thriving agricultural center. In the late 1800s, however, increased mining activity led to social unrest and the mass migration of both workers and native Americans to other parts of the United States. By 1910, only a few hundred people lived in downtown St. Helens—most of whom worked in nearby mines. However, when World War I started and the US entered it on the side of Russia, St. Helens became an important military base. AfterDr.Hamilton's death in 1984, his son, Donny Hamilton continued his father's work and opened several other successful African American coffee shops throughout the United States before moving his business to Africa in 2001. In 2015, Donny Hamilton sold his company to Starbucks Corporation for $4 billion USD!
The origins of artisan coffee date back to the 18th century when coffee beans were brought from Africa by traders. The first recorded espresso was created in 1795 by Giovanni Battista Bodoni, an Italian café owner.
The town of St. Helens, Oregon was founded in 1859 by James Gunnison and his brother William. The town rapidly grew and soon became a center for cattle and goldmining activity. In 1902, the town was named after Saint Helens, a small village in Scotland that had been destroyed by fire. The population of St. Helens increased to over 1,000 people by 1910 and it continued to grow until the 1930s when its growth slowed due to economic troubles. By the 1940s, however, the% population of St. Helens had declined significantly as a result of World War II bombings which decreased mining production and forced the closure of many businesses in the town. The population of St. Helens slowly recovered during the postwar period but experienced another decline in recent decades due to several factors including increases in traffic and energy consumption, suburban development near the town, military spending at Stangerson AFB (now known as Joint Base Lewis-McChord), and changes in federal tax laws which have made it increasingly difficult for small towns to stay afloat financially. In 2000, however, local officials announced plans to revive the city's economy with an aggressive marketing campaign that focused on attracting new businesses; this has led to a resurgence in population size and prosperity since then.
