Small batch coffee has been a part of Springfield, Oregon since the 1800s. In 1851, Captain Lewis and his team started the first small business in town – The Lewis Coffee House. This business servedFilter coffee until 1886 when Mr. and Mrs. John Wesley bought it and changed the name to The JavaHouse Coffee House. From here on out, small batch coffee was an important part of the town’s economy. In 1907, The JavaHouse closed its doors for good because of lack of customers. However, within a few years, another small business opened up called The Dutch Bros Coffee Shop which continued to serve Filter coffee until 1951. This is when Captain Lewis’ son-in-law started the first commercial grower of red beans in Springfield – Tom & Jerry’s Coffee Co ground beans for their own use only (and not for sale to other businesses). Since then, Springfield has had its own small batch coffee tradition! Today, many local businesses continue to serve Filter coffee from their trucks or homes while others have set up shop inside larger stores like Safeway or Kroger.
