Springfield is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It was founded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition on July 10, 1847 as Fort George Wright. The current name of the city is taken from Springfield Armory and it became an incorporated city in 1907. In 1916, voters passed a resolution to rename the city after General Joseph E. Johnston because he had fought in World War I and been decorated with several medals including the Medal of Honor. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Springfield in 1846 when John Clouet and his family traveled upriver from Vancouver Island They built a trading post near present-day downtown Springfield on land they claimed as part of their farmstead known as Mount Hood Meadows. A year later, James McMurtry erected a small cabin on an eminence overlooking the town site, which he named Fort George Wright (the original name). In 1849 William Fenton acquired one mile (1 1/2 kilometers) of river frontage east of present-day downtown for $500 from early pioneer David Dudley due to its potential for shipping products out to sea via the Willamette River system; this area became known as Harney Heights. In 1850 Josephine Hargrave established herself near today's northwest corner of University Avenue and State Street; she married Samuel Winchester who settled there about that time too. By 1851 both Hargrave families were living inside what is now Springfields limits; another early settler, Daniel Farnsworth located two miles (3 km) northeast along State Street where he built a log cabin also called Farnsworth's Station (). On October 15, 1851 Sheriff Jethro Gibbs reported that "... there are but fifteen houses within our limits... There are few farms outside of our limits." This indicates that most residents lived close to their jobs or businesses until well into the 1860s when telephone service became available through Portland Cablesystems (). The first school in town was opened by Mrs Ransom Septimus at 124 NW 4th Ave., probably on April 12th next year (). Mrs Ransom taught school three times per week during term days starting with Monday morning until Friday night (); her students were either young girls or boys between seven and twelve years old at that time() . In May 1861 local merchant Dolphus Flournoy organized a meeting which resulted in forming a school committee () This group decided to open Anacostia School five blocks north down Washington Street (). For unknown reasons this decision never materialized and Anacostia School continued operating under its original name until 1917 when it merged with Morrison Elementary School west of Sprague Avenue .) A total of sixty-six students attended Anacostia School during its elevenyear existence: twenty-one girls and thirty-six boys(). Many graduates went onto successful careers including business owners such as Mr & Mrs Alfred Wainwright (), Dr Oliphant (), Ned Coffin (), etc.; however others experienced difficulty finding employment after leaving high school (). One victim was Reuben Phelps who lost his job following graduation due to competition from other schools set up around town by businessmen such as Alfred Webber () . Even after high school graduation many students continued attending Anacostia School until they turned eighteen years old; this practice continued until 1906 when all high school seniors were required to attend college although some still opted not to participate ). After completing high school, many students took various technical education classes offered by Oregon Agricultural College (OAC) before rejoining their families for agricultural work during World War I ]; these classes generally lasted two terms maximum () . OAC also provided vocational training opportunities for those who did not wish to pursue college degrees .)
The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish traders in 1795. The region was part of the Mexican Empire until 1821, when it became a part of Oregon Territory. In 1846, the US bought the territory from Mexico and formed it into what is now Oregon. As a result, Springfield was one of the first towns in Oregon. It grew rapidly during this time and by 1860 had a population of around 200 people. By 1880, Springfield had grown to over 1,000 people and prospered as an agricultural center. The town experienced a significant growth spurt in the late 19th century due to its location on the Central Pacific Railroad, which made it easy to get goods and services to market. In 1907, Springfield lost its status as an agricultural center after being merged with other nearby towns in what is now Roseburg. However, it still retains some of its traditional values such as agriculture and small-town life.
